Have you ever had that Matrix moment when you can freeze time for a moment, just to get your bearings? It is that ‘eureka’ moment that everything makes sense,
Yet being illogical, senseless jumble. It is like trying to narrate one’s dream, which makes sense in the head but cannot be described. This image is the description of ‘Life in a constant state of flux.’ One could go crazy trying to understand the multitude of events at play in each person’s life multiplied by 7 billion (Earth population) – mutually exclusive yet cosmically connected, having impact on the evolving canvas of the universe.
Our brains are hard-wired to resist change, but we are being subjected to it all the time. Talk about a constant struggle uphill, while juggling the various roles of life. Our mind’s defense mechanism creates an illusionary anchor to give repose to the crazy chaos surrounding us, but even that is transitory. For example you are not the same person you were a minute ago, before you started reading this blog. It is all part of evolution in our lives; some changes are happening at break-neck speed, while some are snail-paced, sculpting away our personalities.
I always used to speculate about Heraclitus philosophy of “You could not step twice into the same river” while I watch the monotonous lives of humanity. Some people spend a lifetime in the same job, in the same neighborhood for decades and feel stagnant and stuck in their lifestyles. The choices we have in the river of life are; either we go with the flow and never know which shore will we land, or go against the flow, changing the course of the river and leaving a legacy behind. It’s a paradox of ‘damned if I do’ and ‘damned if I don’t,’ but at-least the learnings and the rewards are more when we carve out our destinies rather than succumbing to whatever nature has in store for us. Even the ‘go-with-the-flow’, are having a butterfly affect on the rest of the humanity, as all turbulence would create a flood!
‘Change is the only constant’ in our life and we see it around us all the time, in the form of seasons, temperatures, day and night, cultural diversity, social classes, religions, physical features, rituals, languages, careers, finances, technology, health, moods, dreams, attitudes, emotions, thought patterns, maturity levels, etc. etc. There is a kaleidoscope of changes within and outside us.
We still get anxious when something out-of-the-ordinary happens to us. Uncertainty about the future makes us insecure. If we accept the fact that life is all about change, it would give us a source of comfort, because Life is a carousel, and all what we are going through now, will change over the next bend.
If life is a box of chocolate, why over analyze at what’s coming next – lets just enjoy this roller coaster ride. We usually view this flux with short term frame of reference, but if we keep the bigger picture in mind, it just another gust of wind taking us to newer destinations. We were never designed to be in a state of repose. The choices are simple – either we bring about a change in ourselves or change will be imposed upon us. Every action or inaction in our lives is altering the destinies of others. Even though we are just a small spokes in the earth’s wheel, but play a significant role in the collective consciousness of humanity. Due to our limited vision, we can only see the cause and effect in our lives, but not in the wholistic future of humanity. If we play our part right, the karmic forces will bring glad tidings to us too.
A Persian monarch once asked his advisors to inscribe on his ring a statement that will always be true and the wise man said, “This too shall pass”. A source of solace in grief and anxiety, and a stance of humility and gratitude, in joy. Nothing remains the same, so lets enjoy this ride!!
