I want to share with you seven key of success.  They are simple and you probably won't read anything you don't already know. But in all seven of these categories, I have constantly messed up, constantly forgotten, and constantly had to relearn the lessons. Here's your chance to learn on my dime.

I can best represent my definition of success through the two captains I had in the U.S. Navy. My first captain was extraordinary--tall, erect, an Annapolis graduate. Our ship won honors and awards, and he went on to become an admiral.
My second captain came on board and when I saw him, I though he was a Columbo in a naval uniform. He was a captain; he never made it to admiral and retired quietly, with no fame, to a small town.
It was my second caption who was the extraordinary success and the individual whom I try to emulate. The simple reason: My first captain made life less pleasant for all around him, with the end result being his own gain. My second captain made life for all around him more tolerable, often at his own expense. My second captain, Captain Mallard, is the success that I want you to think about.
1.  Seek happiness, seek inner joy.  As you choose your life path and career, find the place where getting up in the morning and going to be a part of it is something you want to do. Put that above frame, fortune, and other tangible or intangible goals you may have. If you do, not only will you love your work, but you will enhance the chance of reaching other

goals sooner.
2.  Go somewhere where you can be mentored.
Be around people you can learn from. Listen to them, talk with them, but when you choose a mentor, do not choose that person simply on what they have accomplished; look inside and see who they are.
3.  Challenge the norm and explore the new. Be diplomatic, show some grace and humility, but challenge the norm wherever you go, explore the new, and help others, to move forward.
4.  Learn much with the wisdom of hindsight. Learn from the wisdom of hindsight, but don't judge with the wisdom of hindsight. Don't judge the acts and deeds of others, and don't judge yourself.
5.   Treat yourself the same way you would treat you own best friend. There was a time when I was being challenged in my career. Things were going wrong, I was berating myself, and I didn't like myself. I thought I was doing a great job of hiding it, but apparently everyone who knew me knew what I was going through. My regular Saturday golf partner called me up and said, "You've got to learn to treat yourself the same way." Treat yourself as well as you would treat you own best friend.
6.  Live in a world of relationships, not transactions. Strive to build relationships. Whatever career you choose, let that lead. If you build relationships, if they are genuine, if they are real, if you are listening to those around you, then you will have all the transactions you need to be successful. If you drive yourself for transactions, your success will be short-term. If you drive yourself for relationships,

your success will be long-term.
7.  Never leave your friends and family behind.
Do not think that working too many hours, being away from home too much time, having too little time to make a call or visit when it is needed, that you are doing that for your family. At some point you will wake up and realize that you are doing that to your family. Take time for your friends. Whatever price you've had to pay, keep that priority where it belongs in your life.

Take these words at heart. Have a passion for the game of life and your career. Love your team. If you don't enjoy the people you are going to work with, find a way to love them, but also take that in the broader perspective and love your fellow man and woman. Strive only to do your best. Perform at your very best level.
You are a unique individual, and that uniqueness may be the most wonderful gift you possess. So much is awaiting you as an individual. Take your uniqueness and add value to the world around you.
