Dear Friend
The Oracle at Delphi's temple bore the famous inscription, "Know
thyself." It is said
that the secret of life can be found in this
phrase.
Still, a fully-global self-awakening remains essential to the evolution
of our species. It merits our most sincere attention and must begin with
the individual. – Me !!!
Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living."
Critical self-analysis is the surest prescription for a healthy state of
mind. It cultivates the wisdom and confidence and a vision for the
future. We cannot change the world until we first change ourselves.

Where do I begin the journey of self-discovery.
If we look back over the past years, our life has been slowly shaped by
various factors, the most important being the influence of the people
around us. To understand fully, my psyche today, I need to make a list
of all the people who have touched my life at various stages !!!!
-
Parents: how they behaved
towards me & how they behaved towards each other. It will have a
direct impact on the way I behave towards my spouse and my kids. And
history will keep on repeating itself until I make a conscious
effort to change my attitude today to impact my future generations.
-
Siblings: They determine my
behaviour towards my team members and subordinates. . My helpful
attitude towards my colleagues will redeem the past guilts that I
may have.
-
Teachers: My confidence, my self
esteem & my behaviour towards authority is shaped during my school
years. My hatred for homework will have an impact on my planning &
organizational skills & bringing office work home & an abhorrence
towards it. If I think like an entrepreneur I never need to be
afraid of extra work/homework as it becomes a passion rather than a
burden.
-
Peers: The tussle between moral
values and acceptance by peers is determined at this stage. My need
for popularity inclines me more towards “people skills” as against
“task skills” later in my life. The regaining of
discipline & self-control at any point in life will make me stronger
and overcome any baggage that I may have carried from my salad days.
-
Dates: My self-esteem &
confidence is re-moulded based on my success or failures of my
dating days. It also sets a precedence for a stable companionship
later in life. Our failures teach us to become better in
relationships, provided we are ready to let go of the past.
-
Managers: The tougher they are,
the more the learning. Eventually we become exactly like our
managers and our juniors hate us.
-
Spouses: Our spouses teach us
Emotional intelligence. We learn to love or hate criticism. We learn
to value or hate criticism. If we change our perception and accept
the fact that they can be the best judges of our character.
-
Children: The children remind us
of our responsibilities, we stop taking risks as there is too much
at stake. They also act as mirrors and evoke feelings of guilt.
-
Mentors: If we are lucky to have
a mentor, they guide us towards our goals, our self-actualisation &
our spiritual epitome. We have to carry the responsibility further
by becoming someone else's mentor.
We also meet strangers who influence our thinking patterns. If we are
receptive enough we can learn
equally from the cab driver, janitor, café
waiter.
Can I stop this constant influx of human influence on my personality or
should I just succumb to its pressure as it is a phenomenon out of my
control. Perhaps that is why mankind was formed – to help each other,
support each other and improve each other.
Wishing all our friends the self awareness to identify the influences in
their lives, so that they can pick and choose the appropriate learning
experiences from each and disregard other to grow to the next level of
life
Always look forward to your
suggestions / feedback
which helps the Intek team to continually improve this Ezine.

Stress Management
Stress in the
Workplace: A Management Responsibility
|
Stress is considered to be the main cause of many medical conditions,
including heart problems. At the same time, the nature of stress is
multifaceted and difficult to define, and the reasons for its increase
are poorly understood.
Stress in the workplace can have a disastrous effect on peoples' health
and lead to sickness and absence. It can also seriously disrupt the
business and reduce profits. Yet many organisations consider stress to
be a personal problem of individual workers, and something which an
organisation can do little to address.
The amount of stress in the workplace is generally considered to be
increasing. The concept of a job for life has been consigned to history
and most workers will need to learn new skills during the course of
their career. Male manual workers in traditional heavy industries such
as mining, steel and manufacturing may need to adapt to the very
different work situation of an...

Goal Setting
Why New Year's Resolutions Waste Your Time & What to Do to
Accomplish More Goals
|
If you're looking
to accomplish more goals this
coming year then forget about New Year's
resolutions. The people that profit the most from New Year's resolutions
are...
* Owners of fitness centers
* Authors of weight loss books
* People who sell programs about how to make money online
* Other sellers of things we use to try to fulfill our dreams and
fantasies
The people that make the resolutions don't tend to benefit as much from
their resolutions. Case in point: When is the last time you heard
someone say something like, "I started my successful business as a
result of a New Year's resolution?"
I've never heard anyone say that and I suspect you haven't either.
That's because resolutions are mostly...

Change Management
Making Conscious Decisions
|
Leaders make two types of decisions. They are either conscious decisions
or unconscious decisions. The former are traits of true leaders the
latter are traits of phoney leaders.
Conscious decisions are made with the data at hand the risks understood
and the implications of the risk known with possible contingencies built
into the decision. Conscious decisions are made despite the risk or at
times because of the potential reward that goes with the risk.
Taking conscious decisions does not always require courage but
undoubtedly at times it does. Taking a conscious decision to go against
the trend, to go against advice because you know that it is right and
the consequences will be personal takes courage.
Too often the courage is missing. Instead of deciding what to do having
understood the risk, conscious “Decisions” are made to defer a decision.
These decisions have a flip side, the unconscious decision. It is the
unconscious decision that people see and...

Cross Cultural Awareness
Global Non-Verbal Signals - Denmark & England (United
Kingdom)
|
Denmark
-
When meeting someone, a firm, brief handshake is common.
Children will offer to shake your hand, and are taught to
make direct eye contact with their host for the first time.
Always shake a woman's hand before the hand of the gentlemen
in a group situation. Please stand to shake hands with
another person if you are seated.
-
While driving, it is considered rude to make the following
gesture to another driver: point your index finger at your
temple and rotate it back and forth.
-
Formal dinner parties are commonplace in Denmark, thus dress
appropriately. If you are a man, you will most likely be
presented with a card detailing the name of your female
dining companion who will sit to your right. Upon being
introduced to the woman, please escort her to the table at
the appropriate time.
-
To toast someone in Denmark, please wait for your host to
begin. Then, before you sip your drink, look around at the
rest of the group, or toast one person directly. Then, sip
your drink and once again gain eye contact.
|
England (United Kingdom)
-
To signal a waiter in a restaurant for the "bill", make a motion
with both of your hands as if you were signing your name on a
piece of paper.
-
Loud talking and other forms of noisy behavior should always be
avoided.
-
Try not to stare at anyone in public. Privacy is highly regarded
in the United Kingdom.
-
To wait in line in the United Kingdom is to "queue up". You must
never "jump the queue" which would be to push your way into a
line of other people.
-
When drinking in a pub, pick up your change after you pay for
your drink. If you leave it there, as you might in the United
States, would imply that you are leaving a tip. Tipping is not
extremely widespread in British pubs.
-
An offensive gesture in England would be the V for victory sign
done with your palm facing yourself.

Bits & Pieces
|
-
Keep challenging
yourself to do better. Executives who don't challenge themselves are
coasting. When success starts coming easy, try something harder. Did you
ever feel there ought to be a point in your life when you really have it
made? A point at which your contributions have been so outstanding that
you ought to be able to relax and enjoy a free ride the rest of the way?
May be there should be, but there isn't. The minute a manager or a
supervisor starts to relax, he or she begins to lose value. Someone
else, with more drive and ambition, could do a better job.
Let's face it - what you accomplished yesterday is history. More
important now is what you can do for the business today and tomorrow.
When the things you did yesterday and last year become more important
than your ambitions for tomorrow and next year, it's time for someone
else to take over. This may seem like a hard, unfeeling way to look at
things - but isn't it the truth? You can't win today's game on last
week's press clippings. No success is final - no success...
