Dear Friends

The first blossom on the trees, the first bloom of a flower heralds the advent of Spring. As if a weight has been lifted off our shoulders. The birth of a new season, a sign of hope that life exists even if it is buried under a ton of snow. Nothing lasts for ever and everything is constantly changing except for the stubborn self that gets attached to one type of life, and has trouble budging or adapting to new set of circumstances.

Once impelled to change, amongst constant complaints, we set our hearts on the new season and the process begins all over again.. Why are we choosing to be blind to the constant changes around us. If we evolve with them as subtly as they occur we will be ridding ourselves of the self –imposed misery.

I was not at all surprised that psychologists have a name for it, ironically called SAD meaning seasonal affective disorder; (more prevalent in the winter) it is actually a syndrome for all the adamant souls who are so involved in hanging on to the past failures or fears of the future, that they fail to see the rebirth of the world around them. “If we stay pre-occupied with our own demons we fail to see the beautiful miracles around us. The explosion of colours and smells”. (Hellen Keller)

Spring Fever – that restlessness and anxiety and sometimes renewed energy. As quoted by Mark Twain which coined the phrase itself “It's spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you've got it, you want - oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!”

It is a time when housewives go a little crazy cleaning the house, but in fact they are shedding the cobwebs of their minds, letting go of the baggage of the past, channelizing their pent up anger into better use.

In the spiritual world there are meditative practices called Spring Cleaning of the soul, where we let go of the bad experiences, resentments, and disappointments; we forgive the people who have intentionally or unintentionally hurt us and finally we search for the why of the situations in our life by eliminating all the aspects which are governing our life and making it more difficult for us.

Some suggestions are:

• Do I need to change my diet so your body can safely eliminate toxins and regain its natural balance?
• Do I need to exercise to induce the much needed endorphins to cut through the depressive phase?
• How much of my time is spent working?
• How much of my time is spent worrying?
• How much of my time is spent with Family?
• How much of my time is spent enjoying myself?
• Am I getting 6-8 hours of sleep a night?
• When is the last time I took time for myself? Am I spending some “Me Time”?
• Can I simplify my life?

Time to look at the positive side of life, If I am alive, it means that I have means to overcome any adversity that comes my way. If there is global recession at the moment, I need to tell myself that it won’t last for ever and even if it does, it is not stronger than my resolve to thrive through it.

If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome. ~Anne Bradstreet

Always look forward to your suggestions / feedback which helps the Intek team to continually improve this Ezine.

Delegation

Task Allocation

In any team sport, a lot of time is spent choosing the players who will play in each game. The selection process also involves deciding the position where each team member will play, based on the player’s skill, form (current ability to perform well) and the likely opposition that the team will face.

Just as this is true in sport, it is true in business. Leaders need to select the right people for the right jobs, and assign them tasks that fit with their skills and proficiencies. This provides structure.

So how do you do this? To field a match-winning team, first you need to understand the game that has to be played and the skills and abilities required to play it: There’s no point asking a football team to play baseball if you want to win at the top level.

Then you have to place the correct player in the correct position. Mere common sense, you would think – but then, as the old quip...

Time Management

Personal Time Management for Busy Managers

Time passes, quickly. This article looks at the basics of Personal Time Management and describes how the Manager can assume control of this basic resource.

The "Eff" words

  • The three "Eff" words are [concise OED]:

  • Effective - having a definite or desired effect

  • Efficient - productive with minimum waste or effort

  • Effortless -

seemingly without effort; natural, easy
Personal Time Management is about winning the "Eff" words: making them apply to you and your daily routines...

Communication Skills

9 Verbal Communication Tips To Make You An Effective Communicator

Advanced Communication Skills - where do I get some of those please?!! Right here, right now, you can learn 9 advanced communication techniques to move you into the premier league of effective communicators.

Presupposition - done already!

Perhaps the most important advanced communication skill is the use of presuppositions. Instead of saying "try to improve your communication skills", make use of what people mostly do - that is, to comply - and turn your request into a statement, not a question e.g. "as your communication skills improve, notice how you become more confident in your abilities".

Double Bind - damned if you do and damned if you don't

If you're working with someone and come up against a brick wall, look out for double binds - the catch 22 of communication. Chances are they've limited their thinking to the point they believe they are going to fail, no matter what choice they make. Help people

Cross Cultural Awareness

Global Non-Verbal Signals - Australia & Bangladesh

Hong Kong

  • Due to almost one hundred years of British influence in Hong Kong, many British customs are apparent. A firm handshake is appreciated, however a looser grip might prevail, and the personal space between people is somewhat smaller.

  • When talking with someone, be sure not to blink your eyes conspicuously, as this is a sign of disrespect and boredom.

  • To beckon someone in Hong Kong, extend your arm and place your palm downward. Make a scratching motion with your fingers, as in this picture. Never use your index finger, with your palm up and toward you with your finger wagging towards you...this gesture is only for animals.

  • To signal to a waiter in a restaurant that you would like your check, make a writing motion in the air with your hands.

  • Tea is often served during business meetings. Do not drink your tea until your host begins. If the tea is untouched by your host for a long period of time, then this may signal that the meeting is finished.

India

  • A Western woman should not initiate a handshake with a man in India. Many Indian women will shake hands with a foreign woman, but not a foreign man.

  • When meeting someone, it is advisable to fold your hands as you would in prayer but your fingers (palms pressed together) should point upwards rather than forward. This is done simultaneously while using the Indian greeting "Namaste" (pronounced "num - us - tay"). [For the curious, 'Namaste' means 'I bow to the divine in you".

  • When walking down a street in India, do not stare at the impoverished population; as this is considered a way to humiliate them.

  • Avoid showing anger, as this is the worst way to achieve anything in India.

  • When walking towards temples or other holy places, many street salespeople will approach you with their hand outstretched as if wanting to shake your hand. Be careful, as this is many times merely a scam to allow the salesperson to latch a religious bracelet on your wrist and then demand a donation.

  • Before entering a temple [or any sacred area for that matter] it is almost always required that you remove your footwear. There is usually an arrangement for this, and you may have to pay a small fee to the person in charge. [Needless to say, it is foolish to leave expensive footwear outside the building while you go inside. If you are reluctant to leave your footwear unattended, it is advisable to let your companion watch over it while you take turns going in].

  • To express remorse or honesty in India, people will grasp their earlobes. This is a gesture used by servants when they are scolded.

  • When you wish to point in India, use your chin or your full hand, but never just a single finger, as this is used only with inferiors. The chin is not used to signal to superiors. The best way to point is with the full hand.

  • It is advisable to use your right hand while offering an item to someone. [However, I should note that this is something that is not followed very strictly these days, and almost overlooked in the city. But, you never know when you may offend any old-world people.]

  • In India, it is considered rather offensive to (even accidentally) step on someone. Basically, any action that involves your foot and someone else's person is offensive. Apologies should be made immediately. To illustrate this confusing tip, for example, if you step on someone's toes, or your leg or foot brushes against them, etc. There is another important aspect to this -- the slightly unusual form of apology on the part of the offender. Again, I need not tell you, that a "sorry" will suffice and the ritual I am about to describe may not be expected, though you will encounter it if someone happens to step on your toes or whatever. After committing the "offense" the other person, as a form of apology, may tap you (touch you briefly with the tips of his fingers usually on the shoulder), and then in the same motion tap his own forehead. This is a form of apology, a way of seeking forgiveness for the action.

  • Elders in India are never addressed by their first name. It is always advisable to use the proper title.

Bits & Pieces

  1. If you want to make it in the business world - or in any other field - develop a sense of time. Come to the realisation that it is precious. Every minute and every second has but one purpose - accomplishment. That’s what time was made for. That’s what life was given to us for.

  2. If you want children to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders.

  3. Tony Dixon was a printing supplies salesman and for a long time he had tried in vain to sell his merchandise to the owner of a busy printing shop. Unfortunately, the owner felt obligated to an acquaintance who had furnished the shop’s supplies since it opened. In an effort to work his way in, Tony would occasionally leave samples of his goods at the shop and offer to show the shop crew how to use them. After several such calls, Tony made friends with the pressmen and discovered that they preferred his products over the ones the owner insisted that they use.

Hoping he could sell their supervisor, one of the pressmen said: “Tony, if you really want to get on Mr. Cowan’s good side, you ought to invite him to golf with you at your country club. He’s a golf nut!” As predicted, Mr. Cowan was delighted to learn that Tony was also a golfer, and a plying date was set up immediately. Once the ice was broken,....
