Stress Management

1.  Turn needs into preferences. Our basic physical needs translate into food, water, and keeping warm. Everything else is a preference. Don’t get attached to preferences.
2.  Simplify, simplify, simplify...
3.  Unplug your phone. Want to take a long bath, meditate, sleep, or read without interruption? Drum up the courage to temporarily disconnect. (The possibility of there being a terrible emergency in the next hour or so is almost nil). Or use an answering machine.

Dear Friends

Can we define in a few words, ‘what is life’? Every person I have asked comes up with a unique description based on their childhood conditioning, life experiences, disappointments and successes. How can we be sure what the reality of life actually is? Scientists try to explain it in a logical way by going into the biological aspect of the origin of life; but does that explain why humans behave the way they do? A neurologist can show in a diagram the amazing chemistry of synapses in the brain but can he explain the thought patterns of a human mind and also predict the next pathway my thoughts would take?

Perhaps the most compelling reason it is difficult to define life is the lack of objective measuring tools. All of our human methods for defining the un-definable (science, philosophy, religion, metaphysics, etc.) are self-limiting in some way. The problem is, once one working definition of life has been created, a previously unknown situation will come up and defy the definition. From a philosophical or metaphysical point of view, life occurs whether we humans can measure it or not. The fact that we are sentient (capable of self-awareness and thought) tells us that we are indeed filled with a force called life.

We see our lives through the biased filter of our perception but that may not be the true reality; so what is the true reality then? Does that mean that we are living in the matrix of an illusion created by our own minds? Funnily enough we try our best to impose that reality on others and are surprised when they do not reverberate at the same level.

One person described life from the lens of a living thing, as follows

1) Living things need energy
2) Living things grow and develop
3) Living things respond to their surroundings
4) Living things reproduce

Is this all that represents our rich life on this planet? Are we trying to evade the eternal question by hiding behind a logical explanation of the DNA and RNA? How can we not include in the life defining moments of our life when explaining what life actually is; the bond that we build with the people around us, or the joys we feel at watching the perfect sunset or the rush of energy at winning a tournament, the sheer heartbreak at the death of a loved one.

Life is a kaleidoscope of our inner emotions, as we experience every event with our heart and our mind at warp speed, with no time to reflect on them until we hit a roadblock and then in retrospect we wonder where we went wrong and try to retrace our steps and bring the verve back to the pathway we call life.

I would like to share the following poem with you to put perspective in to the way we spend our life.

The Dash Poem

*~*~*~*~*~*

I read of a man who stood to speak, at the funeral of a friend.

He referred to the dates on this tombstone from beginning ….to the end.

He noted that first came his date of birth and spoke the following with tears.

But he said what mattered most of all, was the dash in between those years.

For the dash represents, all the time he spent alive on earth.

And how only those who loved him know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own; the cars, the house, the cash, what matters most is how we live and love and how we spend our dash…
So think about this long and hard. Are there things you’d like to change?

For you never know how much time is left, that can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough, to consider what is true and real.

And always try to understand, the way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger, and show appreciation more,

and love the people in our lives like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect, and more often wear a smile…

Remembering that this special dash might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read, with your life’s actions to rehash

would you be proud of the things they say and how your spent your dash?

Don't Multi-task When You Can Use Chunking

We spend too much of our day trying to cram more into it. We adopted the computer term multi-tasking and tried to apply it to our own daily activities as another step in our quest to get more done. The problem is that multi-tasking doesn't work.

Multi-tasking Doesn't Work

As you brush your teeth in the morning, you think about the agenda for big meeting later in the day. It doesn't take much of your brain's processing power anymore to brush your teeth, so your agenda planning isn't suffering too much from having to share. But what about two tasks that require more of your brain's capacity? You might be talking on the phone while you're preparing breakfast. You may get both tasks done correctly...

What do Workers Really Want in a Benefit Package?

In many firms, employee benefit offerings vary little from year to year. The common mind-set is that what worked fine five or 10 years ago suits us well now too. But the needs and expectations of workers do change over time, and if the benefit package is outdated, it could be a factor in your turnover rate and in recruiting.

A big challenge to adjusting a benefit plan to best serve employees is the difficulty in finding out what they really want. The larger the firm, likely the more difficult the task.

Many companies base their benefit packages on industry benchmarks that can be tracked from industry-wide surveys. Some firms also use internal employee surveys to track trends in benefit...

Ethics In Business

Ethics are very important to all business people. Yet, many neglect ethics as an important concept that has a major impact upon a person's success as an entrepreneur and investor.

Consider something as simple as sales. Many would-be entrepreneurs actually hate the sales process, which is a serious disadvantage, given that generating sales is a company's most important activity.

In Flying Solo: How To Start An Individual Practitioner Consulting Business, Stuart Walesh says new consultants often associate negative connotations with marketing. No doubt this comes from associating marketing and sales with pushy sales people who want to make a sale whether or not the sale is really in the customer's best interest.

Walesh writes: "To the extent you learn to view marketing as earning trust and meeting client needs... you may conclude that not only is it an ethical process, but also a very

Cross Cultural Awareness

Global Non-Verbal Signals - Lebanon & Mali

Morocco

  • Greetings are important in Morocco but they vary according to location. In bigger cities, good friends greet each other by brushing or kissing cheeks. Many kisses signals close and sincere ties of friendship. In rural areas, you may see handshakes accompanied by touching the heart with the right hand

  • When dining, guests may be offered water and a basin from their host to wash their hands.

  • It is quite common to eat with the fingers particular types of food. However, follow the actions of your hose, and always only use your right hand.

Nigeria

  • People in Nigeria always try very hard to please their guests, thus they are congenial and hospitable and respect punctuality.

  • Among the Yoruba ethnic group, an important guest will be greeted by applause.

  • A vulgar gesture in Nigeria is called the "hand push", wherein the hand is held forward at shoulder or head level, with the fingers spread.

  • The Yorubas will wink at their children if they want them to leave the room.

Bits & Pieces

01. "The toughest problem some children face is learning good attitudes and habits without ever seeing any," says a well known psychologist. Why should employees at work be any different? Some managers and supervisors are great at giving their people advice. They stress all the right attitudes and work habits, which is good. But sometimes the words go in one ear and out the other. Why?

Often it's because the managers don't follow their own advice, and everyone is wise to the fact. They say one thing and do another. You see it occasionally in managers who lecture their people on proper work procedures, yet tend to be deficient themselves in the same area - chronically late, slow to act...
