Stress Management

1. Be prepared to wait. A paperback can make a wait in a post office line almost pleasant.

2. Procrastination is stressful Whatever you want to do tomorrow, do today; whatever you want to do today, do it now.

3. Plan ahead. Don’t let the gas tank get below one-quarter full. Keep a well-stocked emergency shelf of home staples. Don’t wait until you’re down to your last bus token or postage stamp to buy more, etc.

Dear Friends

Everything originates from a thought. You are what you think . So I am the person reflected by my own thoughts; but I do not have any control over my thoughts as they are involuntary and fleeting. Thoughts fuel my words and the actions I take are based on those very thoughts. The strange thing is, that are my thoughts my own? Even my formal education is based on the thoughts of other people; They did not teach me ‘how to think’ but ‘what to think’ .From Shakespeare to Freud, Einstein to Oscar Wilde, my parents to my kindergarten teachers. The media is hammering my memory with the perception of others – the newspapers, television, internet - A communication overload. Then how can I have an untainted pure thought?

I remember reading a book years ago, by Dr. Doyle Staples, called Think Like a Winner and he said that, to write this book. He cut himself off from all kind of influences for 2 years, just to think about the thinking process. Can I do that today?

If I can not cut myself off from the rest of the world by becoming a hermit, I can at-least start choosing the influences on my mind. The storage space of my mind can be either filled up with Garbage which would yield garbage (GIGO) or I can consciously place a guard to filter the information that needs to reach my mind.

There is never a single moment when we are not thinking. Even in sleep our mind is working over-time. The first thing to do is becoming aware of our thoughts. It might be a little difficult in the beginning, but a little bit of repose can make us steer the traffic of our thoughts. Start watching your thoughts, without identifying with them. Watch them as a detached observer. Do not get perturbed by your thoughts. Don't condemn or justify them. Don't try to control them. Just watch them. After some time, you will come to know what your negative thoughts are about, .once we know what we are thinking about we can take possible steps to alter our way of thinking. Now concentrate on all the positive thoughts that you can replace these thoughts with, in order to switch over to a more positive attitude towards them. Our attempt should be to cut down the quantity of unnecessary thoughts and to improve the quality of the necessary ones.

It is not just a cliché that positive thoughts bring about positive changes in our life, but is also a physical reality. Happy thoughts produce endorphins (the happy hormone) in our body and reduces stress; hence we are able to make better decisions. If we consciously keep altering our thoughts towards more positive way of thinking; it alters the past brain patterns in our mind which dwelled and thrived on negativity, towards a more optimistic view of situations in life.

When my thoughts are positive, my co-workers find it easier to work with me, my family, enjoys my company and the most important person in my life is happy – me.

A little exercise for all of you who want to alter their lives towards a more happier and successful future. Today you will become more aware of the thoughts that control your mind; and if these thoughts are negative you will replace them with a positive thought. Focus on a pleasant event that took place in the past. This way your thoughts will turn positive and your emotions and images will reinforce each other, resulting in an overall positive attitude. It is tougher than it seems, so I recommend it only for the strong willed folks. The others can just watch and envy these people. Good luck.

Always look forward to your suggestions / feedback which helps the Intek team to continually improve this Ezine.

Cross Cultural Awareness

Global Non-Verbal Signals - Central and South America

Puerto Rico

  • As in most Latin countries, people tend to stand close to one another in any social or even business setting. This relates to a different perspective on 'personal space,' with North Americans and many Europeans believing that people should stand about an arm's length from one another. If you tend to move away from first a Latin, it could be considered as offensive or insulting.

  • Men tend to smile and stare at women, which is considered acceptable, but the reverse is not.

  • Puerto Ricans tend to interrupt each other frequently and are not upset when this occurs.

  • If someone wiggles their nose, it probably means he or she is saying 'What's going on here?'

  • You will hear restaurant patrons signal for waiters by making a 'psssst' sound.

Uruguay

  • A warm and friendly handshake is the custom in Uruguay among both men and women. Good male friends will hug; women will do the same, adding a 'pretend' kiss on the cheeks.

  • When young people are introduced in Uruguay, girls may kiss one another, and boys may give brotherly kisses to the girls. Young men, however, will shake hands.

  • To signal to a waiter, simply raise your hand.

  • Many North American gestures will be recognized here. For example, the 'thumb's up' signal is well-known and used in Uruguay. Similarly, because of its close proximity to Brazil, Uruguayans will consider the 'O.K.' symbol a very rude gesture.

Self Development

Basic Human Need Principles for Work And Home Life Happiness

Applying basic human need principles to your work and home life can increase your happiness. How? Well, I bet you don't take your car to the mechanic when the petrol warning light comes on, so why look for complicated solutions when your own warning lights come on?

Like a car, there are all sorts of early warning indicators, which alert you to take remedial action - e.g. tiredness, anxiety, tearfulness, lethargy, no concentration etc. Some you will be familiar with and know how to fix them, but some may require you to check the manual, and cause a little anxiety and dread in the process. If unfamiliar warning lights are flashing in your life, read on..

Apparently, if you chuck a frog into a pan of boiling water, it will hop straight out again. But if you put him in cold water and slowly heat

Decision Making

How to Make Decisions: Six Hats Thinking

The Six Hats Thinking technique enables you to break out of your habitual thinking style and make better quality decisions. Six Hats Thinking was created by Edward De Bono with the aim of looking at the effect of a decision from a number of important, different perspectives, and modifying your decision accordingly. This decision making approach can be successfully used individually or in a group.

In short, you consider the effect of a decision by wearing six "hats", and in turn, articulating the aspirations and concerns of each group.
