Stress Management

1. Doing nothing which, after being done, leads you to tell a lie.

2. . Make duplicates of all keys. Bury a house key in a secret spot in the garden and carry a duplicate car key in your wallet, apart from your key ring.

3. Practice preventive maintenance. your car, appliances, home and relationships will be less likely to break down/fall apart "at the worst possible moment."

Dear Friends

Zaufyshan very kindly passed on the responsibility of writing this months editorial to me. She’s either experiencing a writer’s block or feels that I don’t contribute enough towards the monthly Ezines. So here I am, admittedly after a long time communicating with you 1:1.

Those of you who are ‘Fitness First’ Gym’s members perhaps recognize 1:1 (personal trainer) concept. My son Hamza and I joined this Gym a few months ago and hired a personal trainer – Robert. We find it quite helpful, although a bit pushy at times, that he persistently follows up on our schedules. He pushes us to our limits, which we would not do if we were on our own. We run from machine to machine following his instructions. The best part I like about this relationship is that I don’t have to think or plan. Just follow. So I am actually not in charge. But now after a few months when am proudly showing off my muscles to my family and friends, I wonder to myself… there are lessons to be learnt from this experience…. How did I achieve these desired results?

We are always trying to play God. We want to be in control of our choices and actions, when we (mostly) don’t have the faintest idea as to what consequences our thinking or actions are going to lead to eventually.

Having a mentor or a coach is essential to progress, personally and professionally. Either we undergo tremendous amount of meditation and discipline ourselves, which might not be a practical solution considering our social interactions and activities or we search and appoint a ‘Teacher’, ‘Guru’, ‘Coach’, ‘Mentor’, who can guide us along the obstacles and help us take better decisions. An external bird eye view helps us walk through the maze smoothly, when our emotions block our judgment.

Many people are aware that they ‘need’ a mentor or a coach to help them but they either don’t have enough faith to trust somebody else with their lives or they still have not found their ‘Robert’.

Inspired by Robert’s coaching style, we revamped Intek’s ‘one on one’ coaching model to make it more effective. Do please read writeup on “Intek LifeSkills Coaching” below and contact Shelley at shelley@intekworld.com if you wish to be included in next coaching schedule.

Zaufyshan and I, wish you personal success!

Always look forward to your suggestions / feedback which helps the Intek team to continually improve this Ezine.

Intek Lifeskills Coaching

1:1 Coaching

What is Coaching?

Coaching is a modern and rapidly growing method for helping others to improve, develop, learn new skills, find personal success, achieve aims and manage life change and personal challenges. Life coaching, or personal coaching - different terms are used - is effective for all situations, whether in personal life, career, sales or corporate and business life. Life coaching, personal coaching and similar coaching of this type is different to training. Coaching draws out rather than puts in. It develops rather than imposes. It reflects rather than directs. Coaching is is reactive, flexible and enabling, not prescriptive or instructional.

Coaching is non-judgemental, not judgemental. Coaching helps people to develop and grow in a variety of areas, and this is leading to the development of separate coaching specialisms that are becoming new...

Cross Cultural Awareness

Global Non-Verbal Signals - Central and South America

Paraguay

  • Handshaking is not only the common greeting but done, as in many Latin countries, on both arriving and departing. Men shake hands with other men and also with women. Women friends will embrace briefly and brush cheeks in a 'pretend kiss.'

  • Two gestures that may cause offense are as follows: Crossing the middle finger over the index finger as North Americans and do to signal 'Good luck.' The 'O.K.' gesture, with thumb and forefinger forming a circle is considered rude.

  • Tilting the head backward signifies 'I forgot.'

  • Winking is usually only done for romantic or sexual connotations.

  • If a Paraguayan brushes his fingers under his chin and then friends will embrace lightly, outward, he is saying 'I don't know.'

  • Don't keep your hands in your lap while eating.

Peru

  • Both men and women shake hands when greeting and when arriving and departing. Men who are good friends will add or even substitute an abrazo or hug accompanied by some hearty patting on the back. Women will hug lightly and brush cheeks as if kissing. Children will often kiss elders as a greeting, even if they have not met before. North Americans and Europeans may unintentionally perform what has been called the 'conversational tango' with people in Peru. That is because Peruvians, and many other Latins, tend to stand very close together when conversing. This makes Americans and Europeans very uncomfortable, so they back off. The Latin follows, and the visitor retreats again. As a visitor, try to avoid this lest you silently signal to your 'partner' that you don't like him or his conversation.

  • When walking alongside a woman, 'well-bred' men will walk with a protective hand under her elbow, which she should obligingly bend.

  • If you smoke cigarettes, offer them to those around you before smoking. The same with candy.

  • If and when photographing members of the Indian population, be certain to obtain permission first. The village mountain people believe photographing children will take their souls away.

  • Shaking the hand up and down at the wrist with the fingers flapping, if done slowly, means 'What a lot!' But if done rapidly and with the elbow raised, it means 'Oh, boy, we're in for it.'

Problem Solving

The 8d Problem Solving Process Explained

What is the 8d Problem Solving Process? Anything that involves “eight disciplines” must be complicated and difficult to learn, right? Here to help you, is the 8d problem solving process explained in everyday language.

The 8d problem solving is about teams working together to resolve problems, using a structured 8 step process to help focus on facts not opinion. So far, so good! Let’s get into some more detail - the eight disciplines explained….

Discipline 1 – Build The Team
Assemble a small team of people with the right mix of skills, experience and authority to resolve the problem and implement solutions. Ensure these people have the time and inclination to work towards...

Violating the Axioms of Authenticity

Authenticity is in the air. You see it, feel it, all around you. Most of what we experience in today's consumer-oriented society revolves around issues of what is real and what is fake.

Postmodern theorists constantly write about the interplay and intermingling of the authentic and the inauthentic. But one need not be well-versed in Jean Baudrillard's concept of simulacra or familiar with Umberto Eco's musings about hyperreality to see what's going on. A single day of shopping will suffice.

One Unreal Day
The John Deere Tractor Alarm (with "Authentic John Deere Tractor and Barnyard Sounds!") goes off at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday morning, awakening Brenda and Eddie to the tune of Joe McBride's "Keepin' It Real." Brenda beats Eddie to the shower. She washes her hair with Aussie Real Volume Shampoo, then treats it with Aussie Real...

Personal Psychology

Defense Mechanisms

Because of anxiety provoking demands created by the id, superego, and reality, the ego has developed a number of defense mechanisms to cope with anxiety. Although we may knowingly use these mechanisms, in many cases these defenses occur unconsciously and work to distort reality.

While all defense mechanisms can be unhealthy, they can also be adaptive and allow us to function normally. The greatest problems arise when defense mechanisms are overused in order to avoid dealing with problems.

There are a number of defense mechanisms that have been described by researchers. Sigmund Freud's daughter, Anna Freud described ten different defense mechanisms used by the ego.

Denial
Denial is probably one of the best known defense mechanisms, used often to describe those who seem unable to face reality or admit and obvious truth...
