1. Get up fifteen minutes earlier in the morning. The inevitable morning mishaps will be less stressful.

2. Prepare for the morning the evening before. Set the breakfast table, make lunches, put out the clothes you plan to wear, etc.

3. Don’t rely on your memory. Write down appointment times, when to pick up the laundry, when library books are due, etc. ("The palest ink is better than the most retentive memory."-Old Chinese Proverb)

Dear Friends

Is midlife crisis a myth or a fact? Is the concept new to this fast paced century or has it been a stigma of mankind for ages Do we at certain stage in our lives, fall apart to be rebuilt again?

Some psychologists compare the midlife crisis to the anxieties and emotional turmoil of adolescent years. Primarily it is a transition between two distinct ages, if at adolescence we have to let go of the reigns of childhood, towards maturity, what kind of maturity awaits us if we successfully cross the sea of midlife crisis.

The partaker of the midlife crisis MLC has to be reborn to survive the quagmire-otherwise he will stay stagnant till the day he dies. The funny thing is that, despite being stuck in the rut, very few of us are aware that we have reached a certain plateau in our lives. Blessed are the ignorant… It is such a paradox that only realization can take us out of this predicament, but the realization itself and the possible consequences or actions needed to snap out of it can be so laborious that most of us would rather choose the comfort zone rather than the persistent struggle.

As Nietzsche says “And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.” The longer we stay in the zone of our midlife crisis the harder it becomes to crawl out of it. Our mind keeps giving us false signals that there is progress taking place in our lives; it will cite pay increase, or promotion or other superficial elevations, but we know in our hearts that we are under-living our true potential. It may be to do with unresolved difficulties from the past, dissatisfaction with the present, a sense of lost opportunities, a fear of diminished options in the future or of growing older in an ageist society.

The growing recognition that we are not young anymore can trigger painful feelings of loss, a sense that we haven't done what we really wanted to do, a sense of dissatisfaction with what we've achieved, and a recognition that we need to change, to find a new direction and different sources of fulfillment.

At midlife we must give up who we think we are so we can become who we were meant to be. This transition is not easy and is greatly resisted. But it's possible to view mid-life difficulties as having a very real purpose in terms of our personal development. It is a time of transition, which enables us to grow and explore different ways of being and living. Carl Jung, emphasised that 'the greatest potential for growth and self-realisation exists in the second half of life'.

Midlife is the time when we are at the pinnacle of our knowledge, experiences and awareness and what better time to take a SWOT of the past life and plan for the future. Time to put an end to reactive life and taking charge pro-actively. A few guidelines to get the creative juices flowing are”;

  1. List everything you have wanted to do in your life, no matter how insignificant.

  2. Write a list of all your dreams. Relive the excitement of dreaming.

  3. List down your ten favourite activities and endeavour to do one of them every week.

  4. Organise a discussion group of like-minded friends. Confide in them.

  5. Write down your thoughts in a journal.

  6. Do something new every week.

  7. Eat healthy and exercise moderately everyday, and vigorously thrice a week.

  8. Make a conscious effort of thinking about the positive times of your life.

  9. Find quiet time everyday to meditate, think, plan etc.

  10. Throw the word crisis out of the midlife and rename it Midlife milestone…

Wishing all our friends the fortitude, the discipline, the persistence, to successfully triumph over the challenging phase of midlife crisis, to emerge as winners in the journey of life.

Always look forward to your suggestions / feedback which helps the Intek team to continually improve this Ezine.

Cross Cultural Awareness

Global Non-Verbal Signals - Central and South America

Nicaragua

  • The typical warm, friendly Latin handshake prevails here. Men who are close friends will embrace (the abrazo), and women friends will engage in a brief hug and cheek-kissing motion.

  • Smiles are important when meeting others, and North Americans and Europeans may find that Nicaraguans stand closer together during gatherings and conversations. This merely reflects the Latin attitude toward personal space.

  • Deference and respect is shown to the elderly with many actions and gestures: rising when they enter the room, opening doors, and giving up seats on public transportation. As in other Central American countries, one obscene gesture is the 'fig.' This is the label given to the fist when the thumb protrudes upward between the index and middle fingers. It is a phallic symbol, and therefore considered an offensive and rude gesture.

  • Eye contact is important at all times.

Panama

  • A nod, a handshake, and the abrazo are all used in Panama for daily greetings. A nod and mildly firm handshake is the most common, while the abrazo, or embrace is frequently exchanged among good male friends. Women friends will embrace lightly, and make a kissing-like motion to one cheek.

  • Women should avoid wearing clothing that is revealing.

  • When dining the host usually sits at one end of the table with the guest of honor at the other end.

  • Because of the long North American presence in Panama, most American gestures will be known and understood.

Motivation

Motivate your staff to motivate themselves

"What can I do to motivate my people?" and "What can I do to stay motivated?" are two of the three most asked questions I get. The third is, "Jeffrey, where did all your hair go?" But that's another story.

The subject of motivating a salesperson to succeed -- or to achieve more -- is as much an enigma as it is a challenge.

Big corporations and ad agencies are aware of what motivates people, and they make TV commercials accordingly. The big four buying motives (mental incentives to take action) are fear, greed, vanity and guilt. These all seem to have a negative twinge to them. And the long-term strategy of playing on these motives will fail -- but TV uses them only for a minute. They poke you in the eye with a sharp stick real fast -- so that you just wince with guilt or greed, then act.

These messages are actually called "memes," from the new science of memetics (memes are to memetics like genes are to genetics). Memetics is the science of how...

Negotiation Skills

30 Tips for Successful Negotiating

Negotiating is an art practiced by virtually everyone; it is a craft mastered by few.

There are many techniques to making negotiation work. If you pay careful attention to the following thirty factors, you should find that negotiating, with all the stakeholders who are clamoring for your attention, will yield more efficiency, less stress, and greater long-term success:

Everything is negotiable. “Challenge” means not taking things at face value. You cannot negotiate unless you are willing to challenge the validity of the opposing position. Being assertive means asking for what you want and refusing to take “no” for an answer. Being assertive is part of negotiation consciousness.

Become a good listener. Negotiators are detectives. They ask probing questions and then shut up. The other negotiator will tell you everything you need to know—all you have to do is listen. Many conflicts can...

Business Writing Skills

How To Write Right

Writing is an essential skill upon which all engineers and managers rely. This article outlines simple design principles for engineering's predominate product: paper.

"Sex, romance, thrills, burlesque, satire, bass ... most enjoyable".

"Here is everything one expects from this author but thricefold and three times as entertaining as anything he has written before".

"A wonderful tissue of outrageous coincidences and correspondences, teasing elevations of suspense and delayed climaxes".
(reviews of Small World by David Lodge)

This has nothing to do with engineering writing. No engineering report will ever get such reviews. The most significant point about engineering writing is that it is totally different from the writing most people were taught - and if you do not recognize and understand this difference, then your engineering writing will always miss the mark. However, this article...
