Dear Friends

The tradition of the New Year's Resolutions goes all the way back to 153 B.C. Janus, a mythical king of early Rome was placed at the head of the calendar. With two faces, Janus could look back on past events and forward to the future. Janus became the ancient symbol for resolutions and many Romans looked for forgiveness from their enemies and also exchanged gifts before the beginning of each year. Traditionally! Before the new year starts we have to make amends for the mistakes of the last year, before we venture in to the new one….

The foreboding of a new year starts a week before its emergence. I try to avoid thinking about it until the very last day of the year surfaces. I attempt to calm this uneasiness with a few questions.

What does the future hold for me? Is there a destiny waiting to unfold? Will the new year be better than the last one?

As I go along the path of these questions, I do not realize that I am still relying on the forces outside of me for revelation. None of these are inclined towards the efforts I need to make for the year to be better than the last one.

The bare 10-15 minutes I spend contemplating on my new year resolutions, are based on a few meager bad habits that I picked up; which my friends or family keep reminding me of. Is this wish list actually mine or just social pressures? If these are not my resolutions then what are the chances my commitment to it?

Are these few minutes sufficient to plan out my entire year? Can this deficient contemplation bring about a paradigm shift in my personality to have an outstanding year? It is not a matter of eradicating a few vices, but of a strategic plan for the next 365 days. Most people are very diligent when it comes to building a company strategy but when it comes to the most important person’s personal strategy they do not give it its due importance.

How many times have we actually written down our resolutions. They are usually little notes in the corner of our mind which fade away as the daily crises of our life take over. How about being different this year and actually sit alone to reflect on the life ahead. What areas of my life are out of balance? Should I just ponder over a few or should I at-least make a SWOT of all the zones of my life?

Until now, I have dissected my life into two broad categories, work and life, and have made goals accordingly, now that I consider myself a whole, which encompasses all aspects, where do I begin? The new year personal targets should be in the following prime areas of life. Just question yourself and see what insights you get.
 

 

Physical Zone

  • Am I physically fit? Overweight? Drained of energy?

  • Do I exercise regularly?

  • Do I need to give up smoking or drinking?

  • Am I planning for a healthy life ahead? Do I eat healthy foods?

  • Do I need get a physical check-up?

Intellectual Zone

  • Do I need to acquire some new skills for further progress?

  • Do I need to read more books on all subjects? Reduce TV time for better pursuits?

  • What can improve my mental alertness? Take speed reading classes?

Emotional Zone

  • Do I need to work on my emotional intelligence?

  • Do I have control on my emotions? Do I get angry quickly?

  • Do I tolerate criticism well?

  • Do I motivate myself, my juniors, my family consistently?

  • Do my highs and lows effect my work?

Social Zone

  • Do I need to work on my social intelligence?

  • Do I network regularly to build new contacts?

  • Do I need to get over my shyness in talking to strangers?

Familial Zone

  • Do I spend adequate time with my family?

  • Do I have a good relationship with my spouse & children? Do we share feelings with each other?

Financial Zone

  • Am I in debt?

  • Do I have adequate savings? Are my credit card & lease installments Up to date?

  • What skills do I need to acquire to ensure an increase in my performance, hence my finances in the next year?

Spiritual Zone

  • Am I satisfied with my spiritual growth?

  • What am I contributing towards making the world a better place?

  • Am I passing the right values to my children?

  • Am I at peace with myself?

Global Non-Verbal Signals - Central and South America

Guatemala

  • A 'hearty handshake' is the description often given to greetings in Guatemala. But this does not necessarily mean a strong, firm grip. Latins tend toward a more gentle grip than practiced by North Americans and some Europeans. Close male friends will also greet with an abrazo, accompanied by patting the back. Close female friends will hug lightly and brush cheeks as if kissing.

  • It is best to ask permission before taking photographs of people. In fact, some people in the countryside will request a small payment in return.

  • A soft voice is preferred to any loud, boisterous talking.

  • To beckon someone, extend the arm, palm down and move the fingers in a scratching motion.

  • One gesture that should be avoided is the 'fig' gesture. This is done by making a fist and then pushing the thumb up to protrude between the index and middle fingers. In some Mediterranean countries, this is considered a phallic symbol and is therefore terribly rude-as it is in Guatemala. However, in Brazil it is considered a sign meaning 'Good luck.'

  • When dining, it is polite to finish everything on your plate.

Honduras

  • You may notice a Honduran waving an index finger back and forth in front of him, perhaps about chin level. This is a gesture signifying "no".

  • If a Honduran takes one index finger, places it near the corner of his eye and seems to tug downward gently, this is a signal that is saying 'Be careful. Watch out.'

  • Bargaining is expected when shopping.
