Stress Management

1. Create order out of chaos.  Organize your home and workspace so that you always know exactly where things are. Put things away where they belong and you won’t have to go through the stress of losing things.

2.
When feeling stressed, most people tend to breathe in short, shallow breaths.  When you breathe like this,   stale air is not expelled, oxidation of the tissues is incomplete and muscle tension frequently results.  Check your breathing throughout the day and before, during and after high pressure situations. If you find your stomach muscles are knotted and your breathing is shallow, relax all your muscles and take several deep, slow breaths. Note how, when you’re relaxed, both your abdomen and chest expand when you  breathe.

Dear Friends

New Year is just round the corner and individuals and organizations are trying to complete the year’s pending goals / objectives - all crammed up in the last month of the year. Finance professionals are dreading this period as it means late late working hours and endless pouring over figures to make jumbled sense out of chaos and finish the audits before time. Sales targets for 2008 have to be achieved, so the activity escalates during these times. The vision of empowering of employees was delayed, due to year- round crisis management, and then the appraisal time approaches shaking the managers out of comatose and they send their subordinates for trainings. Why do we wait till the last minute to accomplish what we had set out to do in the beginning of the year.

Why is New Year so important to us, what does it signify? Romans used to celebrate New year on January 1st in 46 B.C. In the Middle Ages, Christians changed New Year's Day to December 25, the birth of Jesus. Then they changed it to March 25, a holiday called the Annunciation. In the sixteenth century, Pope Gregory XIII revised the Julian calendar, and the celebration of the New Year was returned to January 1.

The Babylonians used to celebrate the beginning of a new year in spring, when the new plants sprout giving hope to mankind that the world is continuing to create and recreate; with this hope, we start thinking about our life, how we can leave the baggage of the previous year behind and start anew. It does not mean that we ignore the stumbling blocks we encountered in the past year, but rather than let the weight of those failures drag us down, we devise a way towards atonement and redemption

Should we wait till December 31st to set those so called resolutions, which wither away after the first week or do we start practicing them now, so that when the new year actually arrives, our resolve and discipline is much stronger.

We never give much thought to what resolutions, we should set out, as we are not convinced in our minds that we will achieve them. We need to draw a sketch of the next year based, not on the nagging, we hear from our loved ones, but should be thought of, very carefully, keeping in mind all the zones of our life. Here are a few recommendations based on all the zones of life as in the LifeSkill Coaching Series.

  • Personal Zone

    • Changing Personal habits that have an adverse effect on your life. Time Management, Organizing,

    • Changing self-brand by buying new clothes

    • Reduce alcohol consumption

    • Learn something

  • Physical Zone

    • Start an exercise plan

    • Eating healthy

    • Lose weight

    • Quit Smoking

    • Taking up adventure sports, sky diving, rock climbing, bungy jumping etc.

  • Familial Zone

    • Spending more time with the family.

    • Cut down on the late sitting in the office

    • Planning vacations

    • Strengthening the relationship with spouse / partner

  • Financial Zone

    • Developing self to contribute towards an increase in salary

    • Savings and reinvestment plans

    • Getting out of debt

  • Intellectual Zone

    • Reading more books

    • Listening to self-development audio-tapes

    • Enrolling for a class to acquire new skill. Learn something new.

  • Social Zone

    • Making new friends of all nationalities ( and not just socializing with my own kind)

    • Meeting old friends more often

    • Joining a club or committee

  • Emotional Zone

    • Consciously reducing Stress

    • Taking up Yoga or Tai Chi

    • Opting for psycho-therapy, if need be

    • Reducing anger outbursts

    • Enroll for Emotional Intelligence Seminar

  • Spiritual Zone

    • Spend an hour meditating or Praying

    • Joining or starting a social contribution cause

How do we ensure that we will achieve them? Make sure you have at-least one resolution for each Life Zone. Write down these resolutions and tape them to the bathroom mirror. If possible add animations or pictures to the printout. Chart out a plan, how you will achieve these; what resources you need and by when. Once you give yourself realistic deadlines, the mind will find it easier to accept them. The resolutions do not have to be for the first month only, they have to consistently improve you through out the year. Why wait till the end of this month, why not start today or better still now.

To leave you on a humorous note check out some of the funny resolutions people have come up with this year:

  • Just for today, I will not sit in my living room all day in my night clothes. Instead, I will move my computer into the bedroom.

  • I will no longer waste my time relieving the past, instead I will spend it worrying about the future.

  • I will not bore my boss by with the same excuse for taking leaves. I will think of some more excuses.

  • I will do less laundry and use more deodorant.

  • I will avoid taking a bath whenever possible and conserve more water.

  • I will give up chocolates totally. 100%. Completely. Honestly....

  • I will try to figure out why I *really* need nine e-mail addresses.

  • I resolve to work with neglected children -- my own.

  • I will spend less than one hour a day on the Internet. This, of course, will be hard to estimate since I'm not a clock watcher.

  • I will not tell the same story at every get together.

  • I won't worry so much.

  • I will cut my hair.

  • I will grow my hair.

  • I will stop considering other people's feelings when they so obviously don't consider mine - if that unwashed fellow sits next to me again, I'll tell him he stinks!

  • I will be more imaginative.

  • I will not ring the stewardess button on airplanes just to get her phone number

  • Start buying lottery tickets at a luckier store.

  • Don't eat medicine just because it looks like candy.

  • Spend more time watching TV / movies.

  • Chat more over phone / Internet.

  • I want to gain weight. Put on at least 30 pounds.

  • Stop exercising. Waste of time.

  • Procrastinate more.

  • Drink. Drink some more.

  • Start being superstitious.

  • Spend more less time at work.

  • Stop bringing lunch from home: I should eat out more.

  • Take up a new habit: Maybe smoking!

  • Learn what the hell "resolution" means.

Wishing all my friends luck in setting up progressive resolution for 2009

Delegation

How do I delegate better?

Lots of bosses are good at dumping, but not at delegating. They're great at off-loading the things they don't like to do and dropping assignments on their subordinates with little or no guidance.

Other bosses think that delegating is always the best way to assign work. That's not right either. When you've got a competent and willing worker, delegation is the right way to go, but it's not a good choice for workers who aren't as competent or committed.

Delegation is only one among the four basic options you when you ask a subordinate to do a piece of work. Here they are in order from most controlling to least controlling.

Make the decisions about what is to be done and

Management

Steps to Effective Employee Training

Companies should understand the importance of training employees for greater productivity. An employee that is well trained will be great asset to the organization. These are some of the steps that can be taken to ensure that employees under go proper training.

Define the training objectives - Specify the skills, knowledge and attitude that the participants will possess at the end of the training programme. Objective should be SMART compliant - actions or performance must be observable, measurable, realistic, time bound and expressed in action verbs. Also, it should contain the 3 basic elements - terminal performance (action) conditions (tools) and standard of performance (criteria). The types of objectives will determine the choice of word s when writing objectives - cognitive domain involves words like define, apply, understand, analyse; psychomotor requires words such as handles, adjusts, tests, loads, scans; while words

Corporate Values

Creating and using organizational values effectively

For an organization to be effective it needs to demonstrate consistency in the way it values people, customers and suppliers.

Having a written and clearly understood set of values can make all the difference.

What is a Value?

A value is a belief, a mission, or a philosophy that is really meaningful to the company.

An example of a business value is: "Customer Satisfaction." Another example of a value is "Being Ethical and Truthful." Every company has one or more values, whether they are consciously aware of it or not.

Another way of saying it is that a value is a statement of the company's intention...

Cross Cultural Awareness

Global Non-Verbal Signals - Zambia & Zimbabwe

Zambia

  • Among the locals, kneeling before the elderly or social superiors is customary.

  • Among some tribes, the gesture of gentle thumb-squeezing may be observed, along with clapping.

  • People of the opposite sex do not often have physical contact upon greeting.

  • Direct eye contact between the opposite sex should be limited as it holds a romantic connotation.

  • It is improper to point directly at someone or something.

  • Be sure to wash your hands before and after eating because the right hand is often used to pick up food from a communal plate or bowl. To spit in public is a great sign of disrespect.

Zimbabwe

  • The handshake is common and accepted. Local women and girls may even curtsy upon greeting.

  • Clapping one's hands may be seen as a sign of thanks and politeness.

  • Do not directly maintain direct eye contact with someone. This is considered rude, particularly in rural areas of Zimbabwe.

Bits & Pieces

15. If you "talk over the customer's head" by using technical terms and jargon of your business, the prospect may become discouraged and back off. Jack Parker found that to be the case in his industry: real estate. Though accustomed to dealing with fixed-rate, conventional mortgages, some prospective home buyers, especially older citizens, are unfamiliar with newer types of "creative financing." These include "adjustable rate" and "re-negotiable rate" mortgages, which may require explanations of terms like "negative amortisation" - unfamiliar language to those who are not in the industry. This fact was brought home to Jeff when his parents decided to sell their home and buy a condominium. He discovered that his parents had no idea what he was talking about when he discussed financing with them. The terminology he took for granted meant nothing to them. If they weren't his parents, they might well have decided to forget the whole thing because everything sounded so complicated.

Now Jeff doesn't take anything for granted. He makes it a point to explain financing arrangements in plain English, using words his customers can understand. "Selling homes is hard enough," he says, "without scaring
