“People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can't find them, make them.”

Dear Friends

I am going to share a few quaint thoughts that entered my mind as I was joyfully indulged in my favorite hobby – gardening. As I pruned and sorted my plants an epiphany came to me where I was personified as a plant and God my Gardener / Creator. I am but an ignorant soul but I have been at the moment chosen as a channel to share a few perspectives with you; maybe they make sense to the more sensitive souls while others will scoff it as hogwash.

I gently talked to my plants reassuring them of the fate they had ahead of them just like Divinity talks to us but we are so busy pursuing our material lives that we hardly pay attention to these inner messages that surge through our minds.

I pruned the branches that were reaching out to the sky, as they were a hindrance to the other plants besides them, even though they were laden with lovely flowers but I cut them painfully because I knew that this pruning will yield them even more benevolence in the forthcoming spring. That’s what happens to us humans, sometimes we are doing so well, reaching our targets and then wham something happens which sets us back and we feel we have been pushed way down and are unsure if we would ever rise again; but we always find a way to get back on our feet. Sometimes when our egos get too big for our own good our wings are clipped, to keep us in our place and more so to let the people around us develop too.

As I prodded and pushed some plants I decided it was time to re-pot them in bigger pots because they were not thriving within the constraints they had. That made me ponder that ‘Change’ is thrust upon us when no progress is taking place and we feel alienated by the new surroundings. Given time we adjust to the Novelty and we start to pick up roots and strengthen ourselves and start to progress at an exponential rate. Had we stayed in our ‘comfort zone we would have perished without this wake-up call.

All challenges that face us are a prerequisite towards future progress as the lessons we learn along the way polishes and refines us for the statuses we aspire for..

Wishing all our friends the fortitude to face the challenges of life.

Always look forward to your suggestions / feedback which helps the Intek team to continually improve this Ezine.

Decision Making

Decision Making Psychology Made Simple

Decisions decisions! Understanding decision making psychology can enable you to reach a conclusion quicker. Whether it's choosing a holiday destination, or project to fund, you'll find this outline of decision making psychology a useful addition to your management toolkit.

Making up your own mind should (in theory at least) be the easiest - after all, there's only one person involved! So we'll skip onto the more challenging area of group decision making. Somehow, out of the personality clashes, power struggles and hidden agendas, a perfect solution is expected to emerge

Communication Skills

Conversation As Communication

Communication is best achieved through simple planning and control; this article looks at approaches which might help you to do this and specifically at meetings, where conversations need particular care.

Most conversations sort of drift along; in business, this is wasteful; as a manager, you seek communication rather than chatter. To ensure an efficient and effective conversation, there are three considerations:

  • you must make your message understood

  • you must receive/understand the intended message sent to you

  • you should exert some control over the flow of the communication

Thus you must learn to listen as well as to speak. Those who dismis this as a mere platitude are already demonstrating an indisposition to listening: the phrase may be...

Cross Cultural Awareness

Global Non-Verbal Signals - Saudi Arabia & Sudan

Saudi Arabia

  • If a Saudi man is accompanied by a veiled woman, he will most probably not introduce her.

  • Many Saudi men accompany their greetings with an embrace and cheek kissing.

  • The "salaam" greeting is also popular among the elderly in Saudi Arabia.

  • Saudis will signal "YES", by swiveling their head from side to side. They signal "NO", but tipping their head backward and clicking their tongue.

  • When walking down a corridor or street, your Saudi host may guide a Western male by gently holding his elbow or even taking his hand and continue walking along hand-in-hand. this is a sign of respect and friendship.

  • Joint meetings may be encountered wherein several groups of business visitors may be seated in separate parts of the same room, with your Saudi host moving from group to group.

  • Your Saudi host may interrupt your meeting or conversation, leave the room and be gone for 15 to 20 minutes. this usually means that he has gone for his daily prayers.

  • Women in Saudi Arabia are not permitted to drive vehicles.

  • Crossing your legs or putting your feet up on furniture may be seen as a sign of disrespect.

  • An insulting gesture is to have your hand up, palm down, fingers spread, with your index finger bent down and pointing outward.

  • Again, avoid showing the sole of your shoe to someone as the sole is considered the lowest and dirtiest part of the body.

  • It is not proper to show bare shoulders, stomach, calves and thighs.

  • The "worry beads" which are common in the Middle East will often be used in Saudi Arabia. This is a string of beads resembling a Catholic rosary, but has not particular religious meaning. They are fondled mainly for personal relaxation.

  • Smoking in public is not common in Saudi Arabia. However, there are some places where the communal water pipe, or "hooka" may be passed among those present.

Sudan

  • Arab customs prevail in the North of the country, where handshakes are warm and gentle. Good friends of the same gender may embrace one another. However, men will only shake a woman's hand if she offers her hand first. Actually, a man should not touch a woman in public.

  • Avoid showing the bottom of your shoe to another person.

  • Arabic is often a dramatic and emotional language, and conversation may be perceived as often vigorous and enthusiastic.

Bits & Pieces

01. The world is full of willing people - some willing to work, the rest willing to let them work.

02. Obviously, it takes confidence to sell. A faltering, hesitant salesperson isn't going to get very far. But how do you build up your confidence? Knowing that it takes confidence to sell is one thing, but being confident, day after day, is something else again. It’s a project every salesperson has to work at throughout his or her career. Confidence is a matter of thinking positively, but it isn't created out of thin air. It comes from understanding and knowledge, from believing in what you are doing and having the tools to do it.

Naturally, a goal of every salesperson is to make money. But it takes more motivation than a commission to sell a product. You have to honestly believe in what you are selling and to feel that you are doing your customers a service by selling it to them.

When you consider your customers' best
