Stress Management

1. Allow 15 minutes of extra time to get to appointments. Plan to arrive at an airport one hour before domestic departures.
2. Eliminate (or restrict) the amount of caffeine in your diet.
3. Always set up contingency plans, "just in case." ("If for some reason either of us is delayed, here’s what we’ll do.." Or, "If we get split up in the shopping center, here’s where we’ll meet.")

Dear Friends

On the eve of my birthday, as everyone requested for the perfunctory speech, they were in for the surprise of their life, as the theme of the speech was “Carpe Diem” (Seize the day) There comes in a lifetime that one moment of revelation where the life spent is seen through crystal glass and you realise how mundane life has been so far and then on a birthday or a new year, you realise that the sands of time runneth over and you have to do so much. “And miles to go before I sleep and miles to go before I sleep………”

Its strange! how can a person, within a short span of a lifetime, try to understand his role in the mechanism of eternity. Dear Friends, this is what a lot of people label as mid-life crisis, if that is the case then I love this insanity, because for the first time in my life I have become more aware of things. I know that means that the miseries are as highlighted as the joys. But it is indeed better than living a life of stupor, getting up in the morning like a robot with all the days activities of a routine and then going to bed disappointed at a non-productive day.

Why do I wait for a treasure of happiness to hit me, I can have small bite sized happiness's each and every day. The joy to be alive! ! I know that my skeptic readers, will find all this too philosophical, but this is the reality, and we cannot deny its intangible existence.

Do you get this feeling of uneasiness – as if something is missing in your lives? As if there are some mysteries deep inside yourselves that have remained unexplored.

We have anxieties of the future and fret about the mistakes of the past and all our present moments are lost in this maeningless tug of war. Our lives revolve around two variables – if and when. When I get a promotion, or When I build my own house, or when kids grow independent, then I will be happy. So much life pasts us by as we are wrapped in this reverie.

Most of us are not afraid of dying ,but afraid of living, which is why we take the shelter of dull activities to fill our days. At our funerals, our loved ones try to glorify our humdrum lives. Is that what I want out of life?

"It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us. We ask ourselves ‘who am I to be brilliant?'
Who are you NOT to be?” Nelson Mandela said

“Life is not lost by dying; life is lost minute by minute, day by dragging day, in all the thousand small uncaring ways.”  ~Stephen Vincent Benét

“I have spent my days stringing and unstringing my instrument, while the song I came to sing remains unsung.”  ~Tagore

In the movie - Dead Poets Society, it  reminded to us to, seize each day and cherish them dearly. Every day opportunities await us and we must decide whether to take the chance or play it safe. I encourage you to take the risks, for nothing is gained without them.

The wish list of my mind that was lost in the daily crisis's, has emerged once again, I have to start dreaming again, for without them I have aged, but now it will be my fountain of youth, that will bring the sparkle in my eye, the colour in my cheeks. My back will stand tall and supine rather than bent with the imaginary crosses that I bear. I am going to live.

Wishing all my friends the vision to view their lives in a new light bringing the verve back into their being.

Always look forward to your suggestions / feedback which helps the Intek team to continually improve this Ezine.

Cross Cultural Awareness

Global Non-Verbal Signals - Central and South America

Argentina

  • A warm handshake is the custom here. As men become well acquainted, the handshake might be accompanied by a light touch on the forearm or elbow. Good friends will greet with an abrazo, or embrace. This may also include several hearty pats on the back.

  • When conversing, Argentines may stand closer than North Americans or Europeans do. Also, an Argentine man may even touch the arm or shoulder, or even finger the lapel of the man he is speaking with.

  • Gestures to avoid in Argentina: -Standing with the hands on the hips suggests anger, or a challenge. -Yawning in public is rude. -Slapping the inside of the thighs near the groin is considered an obscene male gesture. -Never pour wine by grasping the neck of the bottle with the hand and rotating the hand backward so that the palm turns upward. Also, always pour with the right hand, never the left.

  • Argentines have strong national pride over their excellent red wines; if and when toasts are made, the proper gesture is simply to raise your glass to those around you and say 'salud' (which means 'health'), then sip.

  • Since one of Argentina's most popular sports is soccer, a popular gesture conveying exuberance and victory is to raise the fist upward emphatically, with the knuckles of the fingers pointing outward.

Management Styles

Management by Interaction

Management by Interaction emphasizes communication and balance of male/female energy as well as integration of all human aspects (mental, emotional, physical and spiritual), creating an empowered, high-energy, high-productive workforce. It is based on shared goals and active participation of all parties, especially through communication, caring and sharing. Actively using energy produced through synergistic and symbiotic differences to complement and enhance shared goals.

According to Webster's New World Dictionary, "Interaction" means participating with each other reciprocally (equally on both sides, mutual, complementary, to give and to get, to return in kind, to move back and forth, to interchange positions, to be equivalent).

The Merriam-Webster Thesaurus lists as synonyms: Coact, Interplay and Interreact, and lists the related words: Collaborate and Cooperate.

The Management by Interaction style of working consists of recognizing:

  1. Thoughts, feelings and actions culminating in teamwork.

  2. Creative energy, aliveness and excitement that constantly builds and recreates itself in new ways.

  3. An opportunity to a deeper connection between people who spend a great portion of their waking hours together.

In the last 20 years, we have been moving slowly away from the idea that each person is separate and must compete with each other in order to be successful to the concept of shared responsibility, team work and deeply inter-related, inter-connected dealings — whether inside a business, in an industry or on a global level. We can no longer function in isolation.

Women in Management

Breaking The Glass Ceiling

Women have, and continue to have difficulties achieving their goals in the corporate world due to certain barriers which are the cause of much debate. One such barrier is the so-named  "Glass Ceiling"

"Women, more than men, face difficult choices, especially in the work-life balance domain," "In this sense, their careers, more than men, reflect complication choices. Insofar as we define 'careers' narrowly in terms of promotion and income attainment, any person -- male or female -- who chooses to put in less effort, is likely to be disadvantaged. In our view, this does not constitute a 'failure' but a choice not to play that particular version of the career game."

Women executives who leave the corporate world when they hit a glass ceiling, want to raise a family fulltime or decide to focus on other interests, encounter frustrating roadblocks in their attempts to re-enter the workforce, according to new Wharton research.

To overcome the obstacles, women should confront the difficulties they face and prepare for their return to the labor force the moment they leave, says Monica McGrath, adjunct professor of management at Wharton, executive coach and co-author of the study entitled, "Back in the Game. Returning to Business after a Hiatus: Experiences and Recommendations for Women, Employers, and Universities." "I was seeing many women who, when they reached 50 and their kids were heading off to college, said, 'Now let me get back to work,' and they couldn't," says McGrath. "These are talented professional women. Why was it so impossible?"......

Communication Skills

Conflict - Definitions and Assumptions

We define conflict as a disagreement through which the parties involved perceive a threat to their needs, interests or concerns. Within this simple definition there are several important understandings that emerge:

Disagreement - Generally, we are aware there is some level of difference in the positions of the two (or more) parties involved in the conflict. But the true disagreement versus the perceived disagreement may be quite different from one another. In fact, conflict tends to be accompanied by significant levels of misunderstanding that exaggerate the perceived disagreement considerably. If we can understand the true areas of disagreement, this will help us solve the right problems and manage the true needs of the parties.

Parties involved - There are often disparities in our sense of who is involved in the conflict. Sometimes, people are surprised to learn they are a party to the conflict, while other times we are shocked to learn we are not included in the disagreement. On many occasions, people who are seen as part of the social system (e.g., work team, family, company) are influenced to participate in the dispute, whether they would personally define the situation in that way or not. In the above example, people very readily "take sides" based upon current perceptions of the issues, past issues and relationships, roles within the organization, and other factors. The parties involved can become an elusive concept to define.

Perceived threat - ....
