Dear Friends
A
prudent manager realizes that if he does not delegate today, his
tomorrow will be as busy as today or perhaps even more chaotic. Then why
is it that managers keep procrastinating this aspect of management? Why
do they keep hanging on to the age old myth of “If you want the work
done, do it yourself”
One parable tells us that it was Jethro who persuaded Moses to delegate
most of his tasks so that he could pursue his higher aspirations.
It took me years to realize the importance of delegation, I learned that
the person who excels at delegating gets the most done, it is only so
much a person can do on his own. My juniors were extremely happy at
getting challenging tasks which kept them interested in their jobs and I
got ample time to give them on the job training.
Time and again, I had to clean up the messes my team made, whenever I
overestimated their abilities, but the sheer joy when they exceeded my
expectations made up for all those times.
In truth, I view delegating as a generous act that comes from the heart.
But you must trust the strength of your team and have faith that they
will rise to the occasion. If you can't find it in your heart to believe
in your employees' potential and don't delegate, your career will
stagnate. The common reasons why managers do not delegate are:

-
Job Insecurity ( fear of creating a rival)
-
Perpetual firefighting ( No time)
-
Lack of faith in people
-
Temperamental aversion to risk taking
-
Lack of Self Confidence
-
Reluctance to yield territory
-
Want to stay Doing Managers
-
Reluctance to lose control
-
Perfectionism
-
Etc Etc
When a manager develops a staff that demonstrates competence,
his reputation grows. Talented personnel seek jobs in his or her
department. Morale, respect and trust grow within a department
as more gets done. Recognition follows and top management can
see that with the staff fully trained, the manager is ready for
promotion.
To get the maximum cooperation of your staff for the job
delegated to them:
-
Involve the
individual early in the project.

-
Define the
purpose of the assignment.
-
Communicate how
this delegated job will benefit him.
-
Communicate
clearly. Explain tasks as specifically as possible.
-
But then, allow
the individual to approach and fulfill the responsibility in his/her
own best way.
-
Delegate the
responsibility and the authority.
-
Stay in touch.
Enable individual to ask for help if needed.
-
Provide feedback
about the progress of the task.
-
Don’t hover,
expecting them to make a mistake.
-
Give lots of
recognition and credit.
-
Incase of
failure, ensure that they learn from their mistakes

Mexico
-
A
warm, somewhat soft handshake is the customary greeting among both
men and women. Men should let the woman make the first move toward
handshaking. After the second or third meeting, Mexican men may
begin with or add the abrazo, the embrace along with a few pats on
the back. Women friends will embrace lightly and pretend to kiss a
cheek.
-
In
some areas of Mexico, you may encounter an unusual addition to the
handshake where, after gripping the palm, the two people slide their
hands upward to grasp each other's thumbs.
-
Many Mexicans are 'touch oriented.' This means they may linger over
a handshake, they may touch the forearm or elbow, or they may even
casually finger the lapel of the other person's suit. All these
touches merely signify a willingness to be friendly nothing more.
-
If
a man stands with his hands on his hips, it suggests hostility.
-
Deference is shown to the elderly, so give way to them in public and
don't object if they are waited on first.
-
Never visit churches or religious sites while wearing short touch
the forearm or elbow, shorts, tank tops, or cut-off shirts or
shorts.
-
The national drink in Mexico is tequila. To drink it properly, here
signify a willingness to be is the procedure: place a pinch of salt
in the depression of your left hand between thumb and forefinger;
then lick the salt and quickly take a drink of tequila; follow this
by sucking on a lime wedge.
-
Patience is important; avoid showing anger if and when you encounter
delays or interruptions.

Team Building
12 Tips for Team Building
|
How to Make Teams Effective
People in every workplace talk about building the team, working as a
team, and my team, but few understand how to create the experience of
team work or how to develop an effective team. Belonging to a team, in
the broadest sense, is a result of feeling part of something larger than
yourself. It has a lot to do with your understanding of the mission or
objectives of your organization.
In a team-oriented environment, you contribute to the overall success of
the organization. You work with fellow members of the organization to
produce these results. Even though you have a specific job function and
you belong to a specific department, you are unified with other
organization members to accomplish the overall objectives. The bigger
picture drives your actions; your function exists to serve the bigger
picture.
You need to differentiate this overall sense of teamwork from the task
of developing an effective intact team that is formed to accomplish a
specific goal.
Twelve Cs for Team Building
Executives, managers and organization staff members universally explore
ways to improve business results and profitability. Many view
team-based, horizontal, organization structures as the best design for
involving all employees in creating business success... ...

Managerial Skills
Top Ten managerial mistakes
|
Managerial success requires more than knowing what to do. It also
requires knowing those behaviors to avoid--the pitfalls that can hinder
the path to success. The astute manager must consciously decide to avoid
these common missteps to increase the probability of successful
performance.
Failure to Delegate
Some management experts have indicated a failure to delegate is the
single most critical reason for the failure of managers. The astute
manager realizes that his or her success depends upon effectively
delegating. The manager confident in his or her ability to surround
himself or herself with skilled people will then delegate to those
individuals. A failure to delegate says a great deal more about the
manager than the subordinates. It is actually a poor reflection on the
manager's abilities and self-confidence. There is a ripple effect
experienced. Effective delegation enables the manager to accomplish more
and develops subordinates simultaneously. Today's organizations thrive
on empowered workforces. This goes hand-in-hand with delegation. To
delegate effectively means first determining which tasks can be handed
off to subordinates and who should actually perform those tasks. While
everything should not be delegated (which comprises another critical
managerial error), a careful assessment of any manager's tasks no doubt
reveals some routine tasks that can be performed by others. This, then,
frees up the manager's time to perform higher level tasks that can not
be delegated......

Leadership
Leadership Provides Purpose, Direction & Takes Action
|
Just like the poem, Three Blind Mice, many businesses don’t know what
true leadership is all about. A person sent me the following comments:
“I'm still struggling with the lack of "alleged" leadership traits in
many executives. How do they achieve executive positions? Why don't they
seek out training to develop/enhance their leadership skills? Why do
they assume that their subordinates need training but they don't? What
actually is the essence of leadership? How can we teach executives to
think strategically, to plan, to envision and to leave operational
decisions to managers? Any thoughts?”
Sad to say, but I hear this comment far too often. Sounds like this
person is working for a person who needs a few lessons on leadership.
True leadership is about taking people to a place they wouldn’t go to by
themselves. Good leaders don't merely supervise; they create a sense of
purpose and direction for those they lead. After holding leadership
positions and teaching leadership classes for 24 years, I am beginning
to believe that some people have....
