As 2007 comes to an end, we wrap up another chapter of our life . We often wonder how the book of our life is filling up with our experiences, our successes and failures, our achievements, our highs and lows, our sheer exhilaration of the evolution of the world around us… “Truth (indeed) is stranger than fiction”

Life is a cycle, nothing remains constant, so it is not you alone who has faced certain business or personal upheavals; it is a part and parcel of all human life. If we continue to dwell in the past, the start of the new year will be on a negative frame of mind and that’s not how you want to start another era of your life. It is time to let go of the failures; but when I say let go, I do not mean not learn from the mistakes of the past, but apply those lessons as a learning experience, to plan out a better strategy for 2008, rather than let it occupy most of your energies, draining the mind from productive visions of the future.


The end of the year is the time to review and update the elements of your strategic plan and business plan; set your goals for the new year and develop and commit to an action plan to achieve the goals. If you use a strategic thinking approach to your planning, you will not wait to plan your activities, since it usually takes at least thirty days to develop a plan. If you wait to get started in January it may be February or March before the plan is in action and you will have lost a couple months of opportunities.


While business planning takes up most of our thoughts, the end of the year is a great time to plan out a personal plan as well. Ideal time to observe the work - life balance of the past year and how you can resourcefully improve the tipping balance in the new year. It is a time to count the blessings of having loved ones around us, supportive friends, compassionate colleagues. It is time for us to laugh and give unconditional love on festive occasions of Christmas and Eid coming up. Time to re-energise to face an unpredictable yet promising 2008.

Global Non-Verbal Signals - Central and South America

Costa Rica

  • In business situations, formality rules. Don't expect abrazos here, and business jackets are usually kept on during business discussions.

  • Exchange business cards, with yours printed in both English and Spanish.

  • Don't ever put your feet up on any article of furniture.

  • Most American gestures-including rude ones-are known by Costa Ricans (who call themselves 'ticos'). However, one gesture generally not used in the United States is the 'fig' gesture where the hand is made into a fist and the thumb is forced upward to protrude between the forefinger and middle finger. the length along the right. This is a very rude gesture.

  • Local people bathe frequently each day because of the heat, and guests are expected to bathe at least once daily.

  • As in other Latin countries, the handshake is the custom upon both arrivals and departures. Good male friends will embrace (the abrazo) and good female friends will embrace and kiss lightly on the cheek.

  • Fidgeting with the hands is considered distracting, almost impolite. Same with the feet.

  • When beckoning a waiter, you may observe that some patrons will clap their hands over their heads, but that is generally considered rude.

 

El Salvador

  • Males are expected to rise from a seated position whenever a woman enters the room.

  • Good eye contact is important in both social and business situations.

  • Salvadorans are expressive with both hands and face, so watch for those signals that complement verbal communication.

  • Yawning in social or business situations should be avoided.

Performance Appraisals

~ Assuming that you want to adopt some sort of 360o evaluation, what are your options?~

Many feedback questionnaires utilize plain old-fashioned paper and pencil or one-on-one interviews; however, online versions are increasingly being created and becoming more widely used. Whichever is used, it is important to have some open-ended questions, in order to obtain the widest feedback possible: there may be some crucial things an evaluator would want to say, that your questionnaire didn't even consider.

If questionnaires are used, the process generally goes something like this: a series of questionnaires are distributed, including one which evaluators can use to assess themselves. The others in the batch are meant to be distributed to others, such as the person's boss, the people he or she supervises, colleagues, and those who could be construed to be customers: in our case, that would certainly include library patrons, and could also be liaison faculty if you're in an academic library, leaders of local community groups if you're a public librarian, teachers in your school if you're a media specialist, vendors if you're an Acquisitions Librarian, etc., etc.

The completed questionnaires are generally returned to a central location for processing-preferably to an office completely outside your institution, to ensure maximum confidentiality and objectivity--and a report is prepared. Finally, the person who has been evaluated reviews his/her results. ~ The Role of Perceptions in Conflict ~

As noted in our basic definition of conflict, we define conflict as a disagreement through which the parties involved perceive a threat to their needs, interests or concerns. One key element of this definition is the idea that each party may have a different perception of any given situation. We can anticipate having such differences due to a number of factors that create "perceptual filters" that influence our responses to the situation:
