Stress Management

1. Create order out of chaos. Organize your home and workspace so that you always know exactly where things are. Put things away where they belong and you won’t have to go through the stress of losing things.

2. Writing your thoughts and feelings down (in a journal, or a paper to be thrown away) can help you clarify things and can give you a renewed perspective.

3. Talk it out. Discussing your problems with a trusted friend can help clear your mind of confusion so you can concentrate on problem solving.

Dear Friends

Life is all about the choices we make. All us human beings with our similarities would perhaps lead the very same life except for the choices we make.

In our childhood, the choices of inculcating good habits have a spillover affect in our adult life. Did I adopt the habit of reading which would in my later years lead me towards self-development. Did I have a defeatist attitude over the critique of my teachers, leading to resentment of authority in my professional life.

The choices of adulthood bear fruits or thorns within half a decade of our adult life. The choice of career, the choice of a spouse, the choice of attitude at my workplace can either ensure my progress up the corporate ladder or be the reason of stagnation. But do I blame myself for all the failures of my life? When I can so conveniently blame my manager, or my organization or the lack of opportunities had life and last but no he least I can always blame my destiny to my (bad luck)

How many times have I taken responsibility of my choices. The choices I am making Right Now are creating the ripples leading to my future.

Not having any dream is also a choice. I have set my goals without devising a course so the winds can take me anywhere. But when I reach that place, will I truly blame myself or blame the environment for being so harsh on my destiny?

Life’s greatest gift to us is “the will to choose” Choice is the ability to select one course of action from a set of alternatives to achieve a goal. What is so great about choice? It transforms us from dumb animals into artists. Each of us becomes another Michelangelo, for choice is nothing other than the chisel we use to sculpt our life. The chisel doesn’t come free, however, for the price of choice is responsibility. But when we accept and carry out our responsibility, the reward is great. The reward is happiness.

Life is not static, it is a flow. Every choice we make leads us closer to or further from our goals. We constantly need to monitor where we are on our journey. We need to ask questions: Am I moving closer to my goals? If not, what corrective measures can I take? What action will I take now to realign myself with my goals? Choice is power. Choice is at the heart of life; it is the creative power of life.

Every little choice matters; the more we appreciate the difference between minor and major decisions and their immediate and long term impact on our lives, the greater the likelihood that we will experience happiness and fulfillment.

Friends! we all know what we need to do in life but then why are we living life as a blind persons? Why do we procrastinate taking charge of our lives? Why do I live life as an immortal; as if I have all the time in my life? What I think, what I eat & drink, what I am doing today will effect my old age. So the time to start is Now. I need to meditate upon my status quo, learn from my wrong choices and move on.

How can I ensure that I am making the right choices? Keep the following guidelines in mind.

  • Pre-empt the Future

  • Give your Best

  • Keep Positive Outlook

  • Be Flexible and Adaptable

  • Be Self-Aware

  • Take Responsibility

Wishing all our friends the wisdom to predict and change the future by making the right choices.

As always look forward to your suggestions / feedback which helps the Intek team to continually improve this Ezine.

Idea of the month

What did you learn lately?

In accordance to Maslow's predictions related to the hierarchy of needs model, more and more people are entering an era where personal growth becomes a key factor. Learning, whether it is professionally or personally, means growing. Growth equates satisfaction and self-esteem. Yet, we may be learning more than we realize, or maybe less… Indeed, it is surprising how few people can actually reproduce the overview of their key leaning points of say, the last 6 months. So you might pause for 5 minutes before continuing to read this newsletter to answer that question for yourself.

Case of the month

How much training did you get?

Since 1990, we have been hearing how important learning is. It's indeed a big market. In 1998, the US companies spent 66 billion dollars on training. May 2000 was the month of ASTD, the American Society for Training & Development. Let me share the HR tendencies I noticed. The figures are base on the 1999 Industry Report from Training Magazine and various ASTD reports.

Livelong learning is here to stay. More and more money and time is spend on training people. In 1998, the training expenditures in the US increased to 2% of payroll. In Europe, the expenditures even reached 3,2% of payroll. This means 29 hours (US) to 49 hours of training a person. US Benchmarking participants projected a 14% jump in training expenditures between 1998 and 1999.

Organizing Yourself From the Inside Out

Keys to Increased Productivity and Creativity

Have you heard this before: “I’m going to get organized this time and stick to it”? Maybe you have said it yourself. Staying organized is like trying to keep weight off; we do it for a while and then fall back into old habits. Most of us have learned many organization techniques over the years: get a day planner, make to-do lists, develop an organizing system so we can find and store things easily, touch paper only one time, “do, delegate, delay or dump,” and have a method of handling phone calls and e-mails. All too often, however, we end up still getting bogged down, and the planners and the to-do lists fall by the wayside. We end up right where we were before, maybe a little improved but still struggling with overload, over commitment, and overly tired.

Why can’t we stay focused and organized? Much like in dieting, something or someone comes along and interrupts the plan. Your manager asks you to do a special assignment; your mother is suddenly in the hospital and you have to help take care of her; you find yourself spending a lot of time being social during work hours; or you are inundated with phone calls and e-mails. In providing personal coaching services, I find individuals have tremendous difficulty remaining free from distractions. In general, I have found that people do not stay organized when ...

Organizational Culture...

...and Patterns of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises

Abstract
Organizational culture represents the best available "lubricant" that permits small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to function smoothly and effectively. Information and the way it is collected, processed and used by the business is more and more critically decisive in an ever-changing environment. This might especially be the case in small and medium-sized firms. Information search and processing represent important determinants of performance and may signify critical key success factors for SMEs in their growing process. This study examines four cultural categories: clan, adhocracy, hierarchy and market-driven and their impact on patterns of the information processing of SMEs. Results from a random sample of 242 SMEs indicate that culture has a significant impact on various dimensions of information processing such as information search scope, formality, flexibility as well as organizational responsiveness. This study highlights the importance of maintaining appropriate organizational culture and matching it with the external environment.

Key words: Organizational culture, information processing, SMEs

Researchers have devoted considerable effort in examining the impact of micro behavioral (i.e., entrepreneurial personality and....

Human Resources

Build a Mentoring Culture

People Development
The people in your organizations train for years and go into debt for college. People work late nights and weekends. People spend the entire day taking phone calls when they’re supposed to be on vacation. And people generate ideas and create the solutions that your organizations need.

People do these things. The people you have working for you today and the people you may hire tomorrow. And, the people who may resign because no one has recognized their abilities.

Yet, clearly, organizations do not do a good enough job developing and promoting their most important resource – their people.

What does it take to develop your people?

It takes more than ...
