Stress Management

1. One of the most obvious ways to avoid unnecessary stress is to select an environment (work, home,
leisure) which is in line with your personal needs and desires. If you hate desk jobs, don’t accept a job which requires that you sit at a desk all day. If you hate to talk politics, don’t associate with people who love to talk politics, etc.

2. Become more flexible. Some things are worth not doing perfectly and some issues are well to compromise upon.

3. Worry about the pennies and the dollars will take of themselves." That’s another way of saying: take care of the todays as best you can and the yesterdays and the tomorrows will take care of themselves.

Dear Friends

Man is a social animal, but is that a biological design or do we form associations out of necessity. Anthropologists have revealed that one major aspect that helped in the human survival of the early man was his ability to form groups. The male species would sometimes hunt in groups, while the female species would gather food & berries in a communal bunch.

Now thousands of years have passed and we still like to form groups even though there is no impending doom of extinction. I wonder if today that same mechanism leads to the staunch religiosity of groups? Or political affinities?

Is this adherence a part of our evolutionary past? Ultimately the modern man is just a reflection of the ancient man. The gatherer still goes shopping in groups, organises coffee mornings and Tupperware parties, while the hunter hunts his prey in corporate golf tournaments and exclusive clubs.

Socio-biologists feel that the evolution of man has been more on the outside than within. The concrete jungles have replaced the green forests but the human instincts are still depending on their earliest memories for the most mundane activities. That could be an indication that I have a link to my roots, much stronger than I had realized.

The Law of Genetics tells us that we inherit traits in the following percentage:

If my great great grandfather was a rogue, do I need to be concerned about my son’s aggression? Can I blame my totally irrational behaviour to Great Aunt Edna?

How much of my parent’s behaviour do I see in myself?

The latest excuse for all misdeamaenors in the USA are ‘ My genes made me do it’

The quest for genetic explanations of why we do what we do more accurately reflects the desire for hard certainties about frightening societal problems than the true complexities of human affairs. Meanwhile, the revolution in thinking about genes has huge consequences for how we view ourselves.

If we are just animals there is no hope for us, we will continue plundering and spoiling our planet in pursuit of power, social status and material wealth until it kills us. If, on the other hand, we are more than animals - as I believe, potentially at least, we are - we must view our self-interests though the eyes of our more enlightened, human nature.

If we don't want our children and future generations to curse us, we have to recognise where their and our enlightened self-interests lie: not in the continued pursuit of material wealth and power - which stem from our animal nature - but in the creation of a sustainable economy and far less materialistic lifestyles, based on our more "enlightened " human nature. This way we can start breaking the chain of selfish self-gratification and actually evolve to a higher species of Hominoids.

As always look forward to your suggestions / feedback which helps the Intek team to continually improve this Ezine.

Idea of the month

Leisure time

Did you know that most people underestimate the amount of leisure time they have?
And what is worse, the same study shows that 40% of leisure time gets lost by watching TV!
We have some suggestions for you:

(1) Grow yourself a leisure tree:
people seem to forget what they want to do. Take a piece of paper and cluster your ideas for leisure activities on it so you'll remember. You might want to group them as follows: (a) activities that turned me on in the past, (b) activities that turn me on today, (c) new activities I have thought of doing and (d) activities that will get me physically fit. You should get at least 50 idea's on your page. Success!

(2) Move to "active TV watching"
Find yourself new ways of spending hours in front of your TV so that you make better use of your leisure time.
(one solution: make sure your TV isn't plugged in, while you pursue more rewarding activities in front of it!)

Negotiation Skills - Reaching a win-win

Several books discussing negotiation skills all point in the same direction:
it's empathy that is making the difference!

  • Now what is empathy? Let's start by saying what it is NOT.

  • It is not trying to match the other person during communication and/or giving the impression that you agree with him

  • It is not trying to use your own thinking process: "what would I do if I were in his place?" (people are not "logic" they all use their own thinking, influenced by their own emotions)

What it is:

  • It means finding out about the other's person's thinking strategies (which will be probably quite different from yours.

  • It means finding out what kind of information the other person has available

  • It means finding out what filters the person uses while looking at the world. What kind of information does he find important? What values, beliefs, criteria does he use?

Leadership

The CEO's Path to Excellence

Leaders achieve goals in cooperation with and through the actions of the people in their organization. Effective CEOs encourage their employees’ personal success because they understand that personal success translates into organizational success. They know that successful people build successful organizations.

Three characteristics of successful people are:

  • Goal direction
They know where they stand, where they want to go and have a plan to get there.

  • Self motivation
As self starters, they wind their own clock.

  • Positive mental attitude
Successful people look for ways to complete tasks. They focus on strengths and break self-imposed limitations created by low self esteem.

These traits are interrelated. Strengthen one and you strengthen them all. Success breeds more success through increasing momentum.

Goal Direction:
A much quoted study found that the three percent of the population who created a specific written plan became not only financially independent but out produced those with only general goals by 10 to 100 times.

Goal directed action leads to success, which arrives when ...

Negotiation Skills

Letting the other guy have your way

Every transaction in life involves negotiation. From deciding where to dine with a friend to renting an apartment, from buying a car to convincing a child to eat her veggies, we are constantly faced with the opportunity to negotiate. Since it is such a common encounter, why do most of us get into such a panic when it comes time to negotiate the purchase of a house, or the cost of producing a project, or a starting salary for a new job? Probably because nobody ever explicitly taught us how to negotiate effectively. As with most things, we tend to avoid or dislike activities in which we are not confident. Let me suggest that this is a topic well worth your investment of effort and time.

Many books on the subject have been written, which approach the topic from viewpoints as diverse as Ghandi and Attila the Hun. The most well-received book on the subject in recent years is a very readable paperback called "Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In" by Roger Fisher & William Ury.

One of the best classes I ever took (in business school) was a 10-week course on negotiating. The class was a mandatory part of the core curriculum, and after taking it I certainly understand why. The class was largely a role-play workshop where, each week, we were assigned roles in ever more complicated negotiations and left to our own devices to work things out. Then, ...

Communication

The ups and downs of employee communication

Reaching goals by mastering the art of dialogue
How can the managers of tube and pipe fabricating companies develop the level of employee commitment and enthusiasm that sparks high profitability? The key to involving employees meaningfully in an operational improvement plan is to communicate effectively to them their roles in it. Many executives try, but few accomplish the task.

Shorn of all the touchy-feely jargon that infests modern employee communications like a swarm of locusts overwhelming a bumper crop, the purpose of employee communication is simple: to share information in ways that motivate employees to improve all aspects of their performance, resulting in higher company profitability.

Two types of communication exist: upward and downward. Without both, a company's overall communications effort will be ineffective and its employees demotivated.

Downward Communication
Downward communication consists of verbal and written methods of informing employees about their company, its performance, and their own performance in terms they can comprehend.  .....
