Stress Management

1. Schedule a realistic day. Avoid the tendency to schedule back-to-back appointments. Allow time between appointments for a breathing spell.

2. Use your weekend time for a change of pace. If your work week is slow and patterned, make sure there is action and time for spontaneity built into your weekends. If your work week is fast-paced and full of people and deadlines, seek peace and solitude during your days off. Feel as if you are not accomplishing anything at work? Tackle a job on the weekend which you can finish to your satisfaction.

3. Eliminate destructive self-talk; "I’m too old to...," "I’m too fat to...," etc.

Dear Friends

It takes three seconds for others to assess my personality and pass a judgement in their minds about me, even before I have had the time to impress them with my verbosity. That is the power of first impressions and yet I do not give it enough importance, when picking out my clothes.

People appraise my visual and behavioral appearance from head to toe, looking for common surface clues. They observe my demeanor, mannerisms, and body language and even assess my grooming and accessories – watch, handbag, briefcase. Within only three seconds, they make an indelible impression. I may intrigue some and disenchant others.

This first impression process occurs in every new situation.. Once the first impression is made, it is virtually irreversible. The three second process involves the following judgements:

  • If I appear to be of comparable business or social level, I am considered suitable for further interaction.

  • If I appear to be of higher business or social status, I am admired and cultivated as a valuable contact.

  • If I appear to be of lower business or social standing, I am tolerated but kept at arm's length.

Then comes the timeless question - Do clothes maketh man or man maketh the clothes? Is it my personality which defines the clothes or the kind of designer clothes I wear would characterize me as a certain personality type.

A friend
who sports a pony tail, an ear piercing and several tattoos, came to me for advice an evening before a very important interview; much to his offence I suggested he get a haircut and lose the earring. He was astound by my conservatism and ruefully said that in this day and age everyone had a right to make a fashion statement !!! I reminded him of the ‘devil effect’ which dominates any interview and can affect the judgement of the interviewer based on the interviewee’s outward appearance – meaning that his ponytail could be misconstrued as prerequisite for irresponsibility, erraticism and non-conformity, while a disorganized person with impeccable taste in clothing can create a desirable ‘halo effect’ to his advantage.

Clothes determine our sociability and our personal brand and we can use it very effectively in all situations, whether a sales call, negotiation, a presentation, or a networking event, we can form excellent impressions by critically scrutinizing our apparel choices.

As always look forward to your suggestions / feedback which helps the Intek team to continually improve this Ezine.

Idea of the month

Leisure time

Did you know that most people underestimate the amount of leisure time they have?
And what is worse, the same study shows that 40% of leisure time gets lost by watching TV!
We have some suggestions for you:

(1) Grow yourself a leisure tree:
people seem to forget what they want to do. Take a piece of paper and cluster your ideas for leisure activities on it so you'll remember. You might want to group them as follows: (a) activities that turned me on in the past, (b) activities that turn me on today, (c) new activities I have thought of doing and (d) activities that will get me physically fit. You should get at least 50 idea's on your page. Success!

(2) Move to "active TV watching"
Find yourself new ways of spending hours in front of your TV so that you make better use of your leisure time.
(one solution: make sure your TV isn't plugged in, while you pursue more rewarding activities in front of it!)

Negotiation Skills - Reaching a win-win

Several books discussing negotiation skills all point in the same direction:
it's empathy that is making the difference!

  • Now what is empathy? Let's start by saying what it is NOT.

  • It is not trying to match the other person during communication and/or giving the impression that you agree with him

  • It is not trying to use your own thinking process: "what would I do if I were in his place?" (people are not "logic" they all use their own thinking, influenced by their own emotions)

What it is:

  • It means finding out about the other's person's thinking strategies (which will be probably quite different from yours.

  • It means finding out what kind of information the other person has available

  • It means finding out what filters the person uses while looking at the world. What kind of information does he find important? What values, beliefs, criteria does he use?

Entrepreneurship

Intrapreneur or Entrepreneur?

Should I Stay or Should I Go?
When a company’s growth begins to dwindle, boardroom meetings grow strained and the finger pointing starts. Executives cry out, "We need a new strategy! We need to hire better people! Our culture is to blame! Our compensation is wrong!" The founder, if he or she is still around, sadly states, "We have more people, resources, and money than ever. But now we are so big we can’t even get out of our own way!" Embarrassed, a politically perceptive staffer serves up a popular buzzword. "Intrapreneurs! What we need are Intrapreneurs!" The "hip" executive explains that Intrapreneurs are "Inside Entrepreneurs" who will follow their founder’s example. The Intrapreneur, he or she promises, will buck the corporate malaise, risk his or her career to get things done and, is willing to "do the right thing to serve the customer".

As everyone looks around the room for this potential savior of growth, what do they see? Executives’ eyes around the table react in three different ways:

Managerial Skills

How To Uncover Employee Potential

People designated as leaders because of their actions, rather than title alone, know that their success is measured by the success of their employees. Such leaders know that if they foster an inhospitable environment, then only the hardiest of employees will flourish. The most skillful leaders uncover and help nurture individuals’ potential, using missteps or mistakes as opportunities to augment and build on strengths. This approach elevates the performance of the group, and also supports and reflects well on the leader.

Many popular evaluation methods, such as performance reviews, focus too heavily on identifying areas of low performance or weakness. Concentrating on these weaknesses, without also highlighting strengths and emphasizing how weak areas might be strengthened, may result in a self-fulfilling prophecy: you build a poor image of the employee and he consequently performs ‘ down to’ his potential. It can also lead to wasted resources, and you’ll end up getting a minimal level of performance from an employee with star potential.

Results of under-expecting the performance potential of employees include...

Ten Tips for New Trainers/Teachers

Just because you've used lots of software doesn't mean you can write code. Just because you've been in lots of buildings doesn't mean you can be an architect. And just because you've logged a million frequent flyer miles doesn't mean you can fly a plane.

But if that's all ridiculously obvious, why do some people believe that just because they've taken classes, they can teach? (Or just because they've read lots of books, they can write one?) The problem isn't thinking that they can do it, the problem is thinking they can do it without having to learn, study, or practice.

I'm amazed (and more than a little disheartened) how many people believe that simply by virtue of their being skilled and knowledgeable in something, they're implicitly qualified to communicate, mentor, teach, or train that thing. It devalues the art of teaching to think that because you've been a student, you can teach well. That because you've experienced learning, you can craft a learning experience.

But with that out of the way,  .....
