Dear friends
"We
act as though comfort and luxury were the chief goals of life,
when
all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic
about." --Charles Kingsley
Enthusiasm:
When I think about the impact of enthusiasm, I recall that the original use
of the word meant "having the god within" (Greek 'entheos').
Keeping in mind
that 'god' was thought of as the powerful-without-limit creator.
On the flip side, another view of the word was "possessed." It
meant that
you had given over your senses and could no longer perceive reality.
So you could be crazy or passionate,
motivated or a maniac. And the boundary can be a thin line. As is true in
everything in this world, I'm finding, the
optimum is usually between the two extremes. But it is only when we become
aware of those two defining points, can we determine our preferred position.
Enthusiasm is the difference between
caring and not caring, between interest and disinterest. Enthusiasm is energy
motivated. Energy is the capability
for doing work. When you work and play you draw upon energy stored within
your body.
The energy that makes organizations
move, depends upon 'individual' enthusiasm. Leaders with bright ideas and
the ability to inspire high
thought and action in others are the main generators of energy. Their
individual brand of enthusiasm rubs off onto other people and inspires
them towards greater achievement. They are effective generators because they
filter out the negativity which transcends through casual channels.
There are untapped sources of energy within all of us. When we tap our
energy supply we become more dynamic, more productive and consequently
more successful. Psychic energy combined with physical energy is a mighty
power that can elevate your present position in life and bring most
of what you desire through expanded personal production and creative
accomplishment.
One of the things every potential
leader must learn is how to get along with others in business and how to
motivate them. The people being
delegated duties must respect their leader. They must be 'impressed' with
his special brand of enthusiasm and drive.
Enthusiastic people having nothing to fear
No person who is enthusiastic about his work, his friends, his family, has
anything to fear from life. Opportunities are waiting to be grasped by
people who are enthusiastic. Enthusiasm overcomes inertia; it throws out
discouragement and loneliness. It draws 'good' to the person who displays
it. Love life and it will love you back. Be enthusiastic about life and it
will reward you with greater accomplishment. (Remember this)
Seven "Enthusiasm" ======> Pick-Me-Ups
Anyone can be enthusiastic when
things are going well; it takes concentrated effort and courage to be enthusiastic
when the going gets
tough. Here are seven pick-me-ups to apply when things get you down.
Pick-me-up #1:
When you feel depressed because of negative circumstance and your
thoughts are negative, reverse them and project thoughts of what you
most want to happen in your life. Experience now the happiness, love,
peace and joy you desire. Jump up, shout it to the roof tops and pour
enthusiasm into your desire for a happier life. This sudden rush of
energy will dissolve your mental inertia and feelings of depression.
Pick-me-up #2:
If you desire more friends, if you want more people to be around you,
to admire you and to love you, then the very next person you speak to,
greet with enthusiasm. Show to others the admiration and love you
seek.
Pick-me-u #3:
Act like an enthusiastic person. Get on fire. Project a sparkling
personality that marks you as a dynamic person. Act enthusiastically
toward everything and you'll be marked as an enthusiastic person - a person
who gets things done. Needless to say, please do back this up with substance
too, otherwise you and Intek, both, will be in trouble)
Pick-me-up #4:
As lethargy pyramids, so does enthusiasm. Don't be lethargic in the
morning, enthusiastic at noon and lethargic again in the evening. Jump
out of bed in the morning with enthusiasm for what's ahead and stay
that way until you retire. Carry a reminder with u, as I carry one. (Ask me
next time u see me)
Pick-me-up #5:
Associate with enthusiastic people. They'll influence your life in
like manner. Enthusiastic people are the now people. They are zestful
and usually getting much from the current moment. Enthusiastic people
will inspire you to achieve greater things in life. Make friends with
enthusiastic people. They are excellent mental pick-me-ups. When you
are around them, their enthusiasm won't allow for loneliness or fits
of depression.
Pick-me-up #6:
Collect Motivational Fuses when you are on a high. You will need them when
times are tough or its just a low tide. In other words, collect what motivates
you and keep it at a place where it bounces up to re-energize you from lethargy
and/or comfort zone.
Pick-me-up #7:
Read inspiring books. For example I have recommend “The Alchemist” by
Paulo Coelho to so many thousands of our workshop participants who invariably
have responded back positively about the inspiration they received from it.
If you hav’nt read it yet, stop reading any further and “Go Now” to
purchase it. It would be available at any bookstore.
Also
please remember a basic law of Motivation: “Motivation once established
never lasts forever”. Continuous dosages are required to keep you pumped
up. Develop a list of sources that work for u.
So find your own "motivational fuses" and never lose them
Look forward to your
comments / suggestions….

Idea of the month:
What
did you learn lately? |
In accordance to Maslow's
predictions related to the hierarchy of needs model, more and more
people are entering an era where personal growth becomes a key factor.
Learning, whether it is professionally or personally, means growing.
Growth equates satisfaction and self-esteem. Yet, we may be learning
more than we realize, or maybe less… Indeed, it is surprising how few
people can actually reproduce the overview of their key leaning points
of say, the last 6 months. So you might pause for 5 minutes before
continuing to read this newsletter to answer that question for yourself.

Case
of the month:
How
much training did you get? |
Since 1990, we
have been hearing how important learning is. It's indeed a big market. In
1998, the US companies spent 66 billion dollars on training. May 2000 was
the month of ASTD, the American Society for Training & Development. Let me
share the HR tendencies I noticed. The figures are base on the 1999 Industry
Report from Training Magazine and various ASTD reports.
Livelong learning is here to stay. More and more money and time is spend on
training people. In 1998, the training expenditures in the US increased to
2% of payroll. In Europe, the expenditures even reached 3,2% of payroll.
This means 29 hours (US) to 49 hours of training a person. US Benchmarking
participants projected a 14% jump in training expenditures between 1998 and
1999.

Risk Taking
The
Five Types of Risk |
You must stick your
neck out if you want to get your head above the crowd. To sail to new
continents, you must be willing to lose sight of the shore. In your life, you
must take chances occasionally if you want to accomplish something out of the
ordinary.
We Continuously Face Risks
All of life is a risk of some kind. Whenever you engage in any action where the
outcome is uncertain, for any reason, you are taking a risk. You take a small
risk when you drive to work or walk across the street. You take a larger risk
when you start a business or invest a sum of money. You take a risk whenever you
venture into the unknown, where your possibilities and probabilities cannot be
determined to an exact degree. From the time you get up in the morning until you
go to bed at night, and even when you are sleeping, you are facing risk to some
degree.

Negotiation Skills:
Use
Deadlines for Powerful Negotiations |
You can use deadlines to your strategic advantage in
negotiations—but so can your opponent. Here’s how to make the most of
time pressure. From Negotiation.
In the summer of 1998,
National Basketball Association (NBA) team owners
and players were at loggerheads over their new contract. At midnight on
June 30, the owners declared a lockout, halting preparations for the
start of the 1998-99 NBA season. The players and owners negotiated for
six long months, during which time the two sides collectively lost
hundreds of millions of dollars.
In the end, it was a deadline that resolved the conflict. The team
owners declared that if they didn't reach an agreement with the players
by January 7, 1999, they would cancel the rest of the season. In effect,

Performance
Management:
Getting
the Most From Your
Performance
Management System |
Is
your organization realizing the results it wants from its
performance management system? In a study including responses from
numerous organizations who had implemented DDI's performance management
system and had been using it for approximately three years, the average
dollar value of positive changes attributable to the new system equaled
$750,000 for the three-year period. Improvements were seen in employee
productivity, customer satisfaction, employee job satisfaction, quality
of products and services, degree of innovation, and financial
performance. If your organization is not realizing similar results from
its performance management system, you need to determine why.
First, you need to answer two critical questions: What does your
organization want from its performance management system? And, what do
your employees want from it? Our clients tell us that organizations
typically want to use performance management to improve organizational
results; ...
