Stress Management
1. Doing nothing which, after being done, leads you to tell a lie.

2. Make duplicates of all keys. Bury a house key in a secret spot in the garden and carry a duplicate car key in your wallet, apart from your key ring.

3. Practice preventive maintenance. your car, appliances, home and relationships will be less likely to break down/fall apart "at the worst possible moment."

Hasanclan Foundation
Donate generously to the Earthquake victims- They need your help.

Dear Friends

I would like to thank all of you who have contributed towards the Earthquake victims through Intek’s non-profit organization – Hasanclan Foundation. The donations sent by you have given shelter to several families You have been blessed by the prayers of all those who have benefited from your help.

Hurricane Katrina and East Asian Earthquake has forced us to rethink our lives. We spend all our lives amassing wealth and fortune but when the time comes to choose the most precious things in our lives, it is always our loved ones. They are the ones we take for granted. These are those people who forgive us for spending more times in the office and not with them. They are those people who do not care how famous we are, or how many millions we have in the bank but worry about our good health and mental well being. We ignore these people, justifying to ourselves that we are working hard for their future.

It started me thinking as to what is most precious to me in life. I asked all my friends and acquaintances and I got very interesting and diverse answers. I wasn’t expecting these responses but they cleared a lot of cobwebs in my mind. Some of the answers were:

Family
Freedom
Memory
Sanity
My Right hand
My self Respect
A Roof over my head
My job
Wedding Ring
Respect
Health
Sense of Humour
Faith / Belief
Hope
Time

Think about it…. What do you hold precious in your life?

Let me share a letter which was sent by an American soldier on duty in Iraq…

“I am here, doing the sand shuffle, feeling almost exactly as you have stated. The little things that I thought were little are not so little after all. Looking at my daughters newly lost tooth and seeing her new smile, listening to my son’s first complete sentence asking me to get him some kool-aid or touching the hand of my beautiful wife as she looks at me the way only she can. I took my wife and my children for granted and being here makes me realize how valuable their love is for me. I love them dearly and wish and pray that one day, God will unite us again."

Wishing all our friends the perspective to know their priorities in life and to cherish their most valued possessions.

As always look forward to your suggestions / feedback which helps the Intek team to continually improve this Ezine.

Idea of the month:

Leisure time

The Dalai Lama says "I believe the very purpose of our life is to seek happiness" and "I believe happiness can be achieved through training the mind, including intellect and feeling, heart and mind." Howard Cutler, another author this idea comes from, indicates how strange it is to western thinking that we can develop and sustain our happiness. According to the Dalai Lama: "If there are certain types of events that you do not desire, then the best method of ensuring that that event does not take place is to make sure that the causal conditions that normally give rise to that event do no longer arise."

So, what events cause bad emotions for you, and what can you stop from this to happen?
Start the day by saying "I will utilize this day in a more positive way. I will not waste this very day."
And in the evening, check what you've done and ask yourself: "Did I utilize this day as I planned?"

Case of the month:

Managing Diversity

Over the last months, I came in several business situations where there was a latent or open conflict between the persons around the table. As happens in most conflicts, each party has the solution in terms of what another party could change, so that the problem would be solved. As often (and as predictable), this other party does not want to change. Take for instance a truck driver that arrives at his final destination, only to discover he doesn't have the necessary papers so that the customer can process the cargo. Often, the staff at the Depot will react "that's not our problem, you have to solve it". And then the discussion begins. The truck driver calls his company, the administration of that company calls their own customer (for whom he did the transport), that party calls back to the depot, etc. In general, it's always someone else who ...

Self Development Part II

Self Acceptance - II

You are always doing the best you can, based on your current belief system. Life has designed us with a built-in mechanism for survival. To repel from pain, and move towards feeling good. It's in all its creatures, big and small.

I think what trips us up is that it doesn't always APPEAR that way. I can hear it now, someone saying “you mean the person that slits their wrist is doing the best they can?” My answer is “Yes”. At that point in time, ending their life appeared to be the best way to end their pain. If they knew a better way, ....

Negotiation Skills

Avoiding Common Negotiating Mistakes

Here's a brief rundown of the ten goof-ups that people commit most frequently while negotiating.

Starting to negotiate prematurely
Starting to negotiate before you're ready may be the worst mistake you can make. Avoiding this mistake is particularly difficult when the person pressing you to negotiate is your own client. This person pays your bills. Saying, "I need more time before we start this negotiation," is difficult.

No matter whom you are negotiating with, don't start talking until you are ready. If the other side calls, tell the truth: you don't feel fully prepared.

Negotiating with the wrong person
Always verify that you are negotiating with the right person right at the beginning. Even when you know the person on the other side, you may want to start by confirming that this person has the authority to close. In a company setting, negotiating with an executive a level too high can be worse than ...

Motivation

Employee motivation in the workplace

The job of a manager in the workplace is to get things done through employees. To do this the manager should be able to motivate employees. But that's easier said than done! Motivation practice and theory are difficult subjects, touching on several disciplines.

In spite of enormous research, basic as well as applied, the subject of motivation is not clearly understood and more often than not poorly practiced. To understand motivation one must understand human nature itself. And there lies the problem!

Human nature can be very simple, yet very complex too. An understanding and appreciation of this is a prerequisite to effective employee motivation in the workplace and therefore ...
