Dear Friends
This month’s Ezine is specially dedicated to all Intek’s workshop
participants, who are all so dear to us and even though we may not
see or talk to them frequently but they have all touched our lives in
a very special and unique way. There is a wonderful quote “You would be the same
person five years from now, except for the books you read & the
people you meet”.
The people in our lives can lead us to a certain path, but we have
to walk that path ourselves. My friends, we have led you all to a
crossroad, perhaps a turning point in your lives - where you go from here depends all on you as everyone
walks their path – alone.
The thing to identify is that nobody can be a support to another
person for all their lives, no matter what relationship it may be.
When we are confronted with problems or adverse circumstances, we
look around for a saviour - a miracle to haul us out of that chaos.
As a gift of divinity we were given the ability to overcome
any hardship. We have to find the strength, right inside our soul as no external help
can truly assist us. Carlos Castanada quotes a parable in his books
where a person falls in a pit and starts screaming for help After
five hours of shouting “somebody help me” he realizes that no one
was going to come to his aide so he struggles all by himself and
manages to climb out of the pit.
Prophets, Messiahs, Saints and leaders have emphasized the
importance of developing the self through self discipline. The only
hindrance in our way is our own ‘ego’ which favours the desires as
against discipline; it does not want to leave the comfort zone. To
curb the ego we need to go against our desires, sometimes it may
mean facing up to our fears. To test ourselves frequently we would
see if we can
overcome at-least one vice in our lives today. Do we have the
strength to go against our own personality with the vision of the
future in our minds, so that we can progress at a much faster rate?
Why procrastinate. Why not start today?.
Wishing all our friends the willpower to bring about more
self-discipline in their lives. Good luck on this journey!
Look forward to your
comments/
suggestions.

Idea
of the Month:
The Right to Happiness |
The Dalai Lama says "I believe the very purpose of our life is to
seek happiness" and "I believe happiness can be achieved through
training the mind, including intellect and feeling, heart and mind."
Howard Cutler, the co-author of the book this idea comes from,
indicates how strange it is to western thinking that we can develop
and sustain our happiness. According to the Dalai Lama: "If there
are certain types of events that you do not desire, then the best
method of ensuring that that event does not take place is to make
sure that the causal conditions that normally give rise to that
event do no longer arise."
So, what events cause bad emotions for you, and what can you stop
from this to happen?
Start the day by saying "I will utilize this day in a more positive
way. I will not waste this very day."
And in the evening, check what you've done and ask yourself: "Did I
utilize this day as I planned?"

Case of the Month:
Helping Customers cope with Product Proliferation |
Dana Lissy wrote an article with
the same title for the "Briefings from the
Editor" section of the May-June 1999 issue of Harvard Business Review. In
this article that the author defends the belief that "too many options can
create mass confusion". She cites a study on customer behavior for complex
choices. 2 purchase systems are compared for "inexperienced" customers (not
used to buy that kind of product). In the first (procedural) system, a store
clerk guides the customer to a subset of products based on the understanding
of the customer's needs. In the second (options oriented) system the store
clerk presents all product options, leaving the choice to the customer. 65%
of customers presented with the first system like the system and feel ready
to make a purchase. 39% of those presented the options-oriented system like
that system (the others aren't ready to make a choice).
These findings are consistent with ...

Tactics for Creative Problem Solving
(article) |
For a researcher, creative thinking is essential. Fortunately, we can take
deliberate steps to enhance creative problem solving. In the preparatory
phase of a difficult task, we must carefully consider the underlying problem
and have a clear understanding of the goals.
Too often we tackle tasks without an adequate definition of the true
problem, and discover too late that we have solved a trivial problem. This
article takes a very general view of a problem as any goal-oriented task
requiring decisions for its fulfillment.
Once the problem is properly defined, I find it’s ....

Re-Defining
TQM
(article) |
Certainly TQM can be defined in a number of ways, and the details of
different approaches can vary somewhat. However, a good starting definition,
drawn from Capezio & Morehouse is:
"Total Quality management refers to a management process and set of
disciplines that are coordinated to ensure that the organization
consistently meets and exceeds customer requirements. TQM engages all
divisions, departments and levels of the organization. Top management
organizes all of its strategy and operations around customer needs and
develops a culture with high employee participation. TQM companies are
focused on the systematic management of data of all processes and practices
to eliminate ...

Cultural
Diversity: An Asset, Or a Liability? (article) |
In time, it's probably inevitable that your organization will grow
more culturally diverse, and this reality calls for a change of
attitudes, strategies and methods. When we think about
multi-cultural issues in the 1990's, we're not talking about
non-discrimination or equal opportunity. We're talking about using
multiple cultural backgrounds as competitive tools.
People's culture, age, and gender make them see the world in
different ways. These perspectives are a key to creative thinking,
and that, in turn, is the key to successful R&D.
We must stop seeing diversity as a problem, and start seeing it as
an advantage. To succeed, organizations must understand and use the
skills, traditions and backgrounds of a diverse workforce. ...

Going
to Training? Some Hints(article) |
People attend
training for a lot of reasons. The obvious one is to learn some new skills
to use on the job or to further one's career. There are other reasons too.
Sometimes training sessions provide an opportunity to visit with people you
don't ordinarily see and find out what's going on elsewhere. Or, sometimes,
it's just a pleasant (hopefully) break from the usual routine.
If you are attending training, whether it's for learning new software, or
to learn to cope with stress, what you learn from it is going to depend on
what you put in, and how you plan the process. In this article we'll provide
some hints so you can maximize your learning and make use of what you have
learned on your job (or perhaps the next one).
