Idea
of the Month: Deserving |
Most people think
they deserve something if they worked hard for it, or if they want
it very badly, or if they have the money to buy it. And often they
use this "deserving" as a reason why someone else should give them
something.
However, the only relevant factor in "'deserving" something is being
able to appreciate it. if you can fully appreciate something, then
you deserve it
I don't deserve a big TV-even though I could buy it-because I don't
enjoy watching TV. Even if I bought it and saw it, I wouldn't really
have it, because it would mean nothing to me. That would truly be
casting "pearls before swine."
But if I can appreciate a painting, I deserve it because I respond
to it and find it beautiful. And because I can appreciate it, I can
truly have it fully, even when I can't buy it and own it.
If you want to deserve things, learn to appreciate them, and they
will be yours.

Case of the Month:
Written Communication |
How do you inform someone you're angry with him? E.g. because he didn't do
something you expected him to do?
Well, you could try it by putting your judgement on paper, or by using
profanity (such as "in stead of sitting lazy, …" or "you lying moron, you
promised to do … ").
Surprise, surprise, … research has shown that such behavior is not really
successful. It offends the receiver of the message and often the whole case
escalates and gets out of control. Other alternatives with the same effect
are known as character assassination: "While you have a constipation of the
brain, …" and as use of absolutes: "Can you never do something right?"

Leadership is a Journey
(article) |
I think it would be arrogant of me to define the word leadership. The
truth is, I don’t really have a definition I can verbalize. I don’t
have a mantra that I repeat to myself daily, that I can share with you
to give you inspiration. The best I can do is share with you a couple
of my core beliefs, some of the lessons I have learned along my
leadership journey, and the brilliant words of others. The compilation
of my stories and the lessons I have learned is my definition of
leadership. These lessons build upon each other, so I should really
start at the beginning.
In high school, I was involved in a myriad of leadership positions: ....

Strategic Planning
(in nonprofit or for-profit organizations)
(article) |
Simply put, strategic planning determines where an organization is going over
the next year or more, how it's going to get there and how it'll know if it
got there or not. The focus of a strategic plan is usually on the entire
organization, while the focus of a business plan is usually on a particular
product, service or program.
There are a variety of perspectives, models and approaches used in strategic
planning. The way that a strategic plan is developed depends on the nature
of the organization's leadership, culture of the organization, complexity of
the organization's environment, size of the organization, expertise of
planners, etc. For example, ...

Effective
delegation – it’s an art (article) |
most every business owner has too much to do and not
enough time to do it in. But there is a solution - let your team
members take some of the weight off your back by learning how to
delegate effectively.
Are you taking work home every night? Do jobs pile up when you're
not at work to do them? Do you feel that if you want a job done, you
have to do it yourself?
Are you a manager who constantly complains of having too much to do
and not enough time to do it in? Then you either need to start
delegating, or if you’re already doing it, delegate effectively.

HR Issues -
X:Employees'
Rights in the Workplace
(article) |
I have been an employer advocate for over two decades. In order to assist,
guide, and counsel employers, it is imperative that I know about the rights
of the employee as well as the employer. Therefore, the reader should not
find it odd that I can and often do address the rights of employees in the
workplace nor should they wonder about my motives in answering e-mailed
HR/ER questions.
Some have expressed a concern, but I assure you that I answer questions
primarily to stay on top of issues which are important to employees, and to
help employees find solutions to problems that they may be having. Keep in
mind that ...
