Vol 3 Issue 12

Dear Friends

Wishing you all  Merry Christmas and a happy New year. Mabrouk to our UAE  friends on their National Day and remembering late Sheikh Zayed for his contributions at making UAE such a progressive nation.

The end of year is near, ever wonder where the time goes by. The definitive line between weeks, months and years seems to fade away and life seems to be a perpetual roller coaster where we do not have time to catch our breaths.

Within these cascades of events we need to find the time and discipline to take stock of our life spent so far. What have I achieved this year? What new skills have I acquired? What will be my goals for the next year ? What social contributions have I made? – Something which will make the world a better place. If I die today, what legacy have I left behind for my children? What actually is the purpose of my existence in this world? Where do I stand in the bigger picture of Creation?

Where do we find all these answers? The answers always lie within. The poet of the East, Iqbal beautifully said “Find the secret of life within the realms of your own consciousness… ” Wishing all our friends the fortitude to set purposeful goals in life and keep assessing themselves periodically in relation to their spiritual persona.

Look forward to your comments/ suggestions…. to help us improve ourselves

Idea of the Month: Goal driven reasoning

Are you focused on what you want to reach? Or rather on what you don't want? The power of "positive thinking" consists in finding a positively stated goal. Bill Gates gives a nice example in his book "Business @ the speed of thought": "The goal of IT is making money! Do NOT concentrate on keeping IT costs low, BUT evaluate the expenses in terms of effectivity: how much do you gain?"

The same goes for whatever other expense you make. Some EQ warning: evaluate in terms of money, AND also whether the purchase gives you a good feeling. Ask yourself the question: "Suppose I made the expense, and it's in place, so that I can fully profit from its effects. Do I really enjoy this effect, or do I conclude that after all it wasn't as nice as I expected? (in NeuroLinguistics, this second step is called a "Future pace")

Case of the Month:Telling vs. Asking

Finding the solution to a problem or need that is cost effective and good enough for the purpose requires creativity of the highest order. No person should be an island in creativity exercises as each one of us has different levels of creativity, as well as ideas. Starting on the creative problem-solving journey requires as many ideas as possible so that the solution arrived at is the best available solution.

There are techniques that will make the journey to the eureka stage and beyond much more efficient, effective and quick. Use any one of them or in combination for best results.

1.  Brain Storming

The purpose of brainstorming is to get as many ideas as possible from a group of people in the shortest possible time. Quantity and not quality is the order of the day. It does not matter if the ideas are thought to be unworkable, or crazy, or outlandish by anybody within the group. Sometimes these ideas are the very ones that ...

Personal Goal Setting:
Planning to Live Your Life Your Way
(article)

Goal setting is a formal process for personal planning. By setting goals on a routine basis you decide what you want to achieve, and then move step-by-step towards the achievement of these goals. The process of setting goals and targets allows you to choose where you want to go in life. By knowing precisely what you want to achieve, you know what you have to concentrate on to do it. You also know what is merely a distraction.

Goal setting is a standard technique used by top-level athletes, successful business-people and achievers in all fields. It gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation. It focuses your acquisition of knowledge and helps you to ...

Intuition in Business (article)

The present is about rapid change. The future is full of unknowns. Depending on one's world view, using our innate intuition helps us to cope with conditions of uncertainty that can seem frightening, restricting, or challenging. Though some people are uncomfortable with the word intuition, they willingly use popular metaphors such as "gut feeling," hunch, or instinct.

Michael Munn, Ph.D. is comfortable with naming and using his intuition. As a former aerospace chief scientist for Lockheed, Munn is an award-winning engineer who has managed multi million dollar covert projects. He and his teams have worked on tough technical problems for which there were no textbooks because they worked at the cutting edge of discoveries. One example is their program aimed at stopping Russian nuclear bombs in space. Munn credits their success to the use of brief meditative periods throughout the day so that they had time to listen to their intuitions. Munn says, "How do I know the answers are there? I see pictures or movies or dreamlike sequences. I have an immediate inner knowing that ...

Tapping into Your Team’s Emotional Intelligence (article)

Discovering the team's emotional intelligence

The CEO of a midsize company asked us to work with three members of an executive team who were not cooperating well together. The CEO thought the cure would be simply a matter of doing some team building to get things back on track. We decided to get more information. In our coaching conversations with team members, we looked for the emotional reality of the team and its norms, as well as themes concerning the leader's impact. We also took a snapshot of the team's emotional intelligence using the Emotional Competence Inventory (ECI), and we assessed management style and the executives' impact on the climate of the organization. 14 What we found surprised this CEO. True, the team wasn't working well together, but what it needed wasn't team building. The results of our interviews and the picture the 360-degree feedback painted about the team showed ...

Global Leadership and Personal Power: (article)

We know leadership when we see it and can usually explain why it has been asserted after the fact. However, we are very poor at predicting its development. the reason is simple: Great leaders - I use the word "great" to avoid the moral dimensions involved in discussing "good" leaders - require more than vision to see their visions enacted and their aspirations fulfilled. they require the personal passion that drives them to realize their vision and the power to enact it.

leaders are visionaries. They are able, as my long-time colleague Dick Hodgson used to say. "to lift their eyes from the edge of the rut to the horizon" or "to see and show the way." Often, other do not see the vision they see at the time they see it: ...
