Dear Friends
Emotional intelligence has provided the majority of mankind with a reassurance that intelligence is not the only formula to success, there are other capabilities which ensure our success up the corporate ladder (and life!)

An emotional competence is a learned capability based on emotional intelligence that results in outstanding performance at work, and it entails four major components – Self Awareness, Self Management, Social Awareness and Relationship Management. Two of these relate to us while the other two are dependent on our interaction with others.

We sometimes wonder which is more challenging for us? To manage ourselves as individuals? or, Our finesse in handling others? Are they mutually exclusive? If we improve our personality would it not have a direct impact on our dealings with others? A very pleasant and un-vicious circle!!

An underlying Emotional competency does not contribute anything until we learn to enhance them to be beneficial tous. e.g. a person can be highly empathic yet poor at handling customers if he or she has not learned competence in customer service.

Having average IQ was a stigma during academic years, but higher EQ levels can be developed and nurtured all our lives. Wishing all our friends the discernment to assess which competencies need to be developed to progress higher in life.

As always look forward to your comments/ suggestions.

Idea of the Month: The right to happiness

The Dalai Lama says "I believe the very purpose of our life is to seek happiness" and "I believe happiness can be achieved through training the mind, including intellect and feeling, heart and mind." Howard Cutler, another author this idea comes from, indicates how strange it is to western thinking that we can develop and sustain our happiness. According to the Dalai Lama: "If there are certain types of events that you do not desire, then the best method of ensuring that that event does not take place is to make sure that the causal conditions that normally give rise to that event do no longer arise."

So, what events cause bad emotions for you, and what can you stop from this to happen?
Start the day by saying "I will utilize this day in a more positive way. I will not waste this very day."
And in the evening, check what you've done and ask yourself: "Did I utilize this day as I planned?"

Case of the Month:
Customer relationships in the Internet Age

The new economy is changing customer loyalty. It now becomes easier to pick another supplier for getting the goods you want, especially internet items such as books, DVD's, toys, stocks, … The customer attitude often is "I don't bother complaining but I'll switch supplier". One reaction of internet suppliers has been to increase the service offered, adding content to their sites, but that's not enough to keep customers come back. For instance, you can go to the website of Amazon.com to find out which book to buy, and once you have done that, run a price comparison agent that will find the cheapest way to get that book to you. The end result may be a true market economy, in which the price stabilizes at level that better reflects the game of offer and demand.

HR Issues - IV  (article) - Shrinking Loyalties

In January, 1990, The Wall Street Journal reported that a survey had found, "Trust and loyalty run low at American companies." Then, in June, 1992, a SHRM news release reported that their survey (conducted by Roper Organization) found that "Loyalty between employee and employer remains fairly stable. Contrary top conventional wisdom, a majority of employees say that the level of loyalty between employees and employers has not changed over the past two years..."

Of course, "the level" could have been low for the past five years. And, I've always looked at "conventional wisdom" as the mother of all oxy morons.

Conducting an unscientific survey of employee satisfaction with their companies, of the 160 questionnaires given to employees in six industries (insurance, finance, computers [hardware and software], entertainment, and law, and medicine),121 were returned.

Only three questions were asked:

 Alpha Leadership (article)

Alpha Leadership is a new model of leadership whose purpose is to capture and share the latest and most up-to-date knowledge about the practice of effective leadership. The Alpha Leadership model defines a set of principles, tools and skills modeled from observing and coaching world-class leaders from around the world.

Prior to the early 1980s, leadership development in organizations primarily focused on different leadership styles. These styles were most evident in the relationship between leaders and co-workers. Leadership emphasized the characteristics and “rules” for expressing an effective leadership style with respect to a particular situation. It was noticed, for instance, that winning leaders were ...

Problem Solving (article)

Check Up! Are You Ready To Take On a New Challenge?

Here’s the truth that we discover when we decide to stop telling ourselves fairytales about the problems that occur in our lives.

Despite what we have conned ourselves into believing, the majority of our problems are optional. Most of our existing problems don’t just happen, aren’t randomly selective of us and tend to be reoccurring.

The difference between a problem that selects us and a problem that we select to have is that ...

11 Hot Tips for Beating the Competition (article)

1. Know What You Want. Be clear on the information you are looking for. Much of what you are seeking is readily available. Talk to your staff, customers and suppliers. Go out equipped with a list of the specific information you require. Look for the competitors' price plans, additional services, and staff capabilities. Review their product line and determine how much overlap there is with your own offerings.

2. Get To Know Your Competitors. Make sure you balance older established businesses with ones new to the market. Talk to them at trade shows when they are more inclined to be chatty. But be cautious, as a sharp competitor they may feed you misinformation or embellish sales figures to make themselves look good.

3. Competitive Links. ...
