“But what, then, am I ? A thinking thing, it has been said. But what is a thinking thing? It is a thing that doubts, understands, conceives, affirms, denies, wills, refuses; that imagines also, and perceives."
"I think, therefore I am"
René Descartes

Vol 2 Issue 3

Dear Friends!
The whole world seemed poised in a delicate balance every moment in time. Within this uncertain era enveloping the 21st century, we have to carve our own destiny. This can not be done alone based on our superficial existence in the so called ‘physical world’, but also requires us to evaluate the true purpose of our existence in the cosmos.

All our lives are spent in trying to don a mask of someone else to suit the moment – the perfect salesperson, the perfect manager, the perfect parent, the perfect community person, repeated to such an extent that we forget who we actually are, leading to an identity crisis, which can only be resolved through “self-awareness.” The key to all answers lies in Socrates - “Know Thyself”. We need to find time within this ‘worldly carousel’ of perpetual motion, to seek solace in the silence of solitude, to communicate with ourselves.

Dr. Allama Iqbal put it so eloquently when we said “When you ascend beyond the realms of your existence, your Creator turns to you at the turn of destiny, asking you of your desires.” Everything is within ourselves, we actually are the masters of our fate, we just need to believe in it and converge our energies towards faith.

Wishing all our friends the fortitude to seek their destiny through the power of ‘self awareness’.

Look forward to your comments/ suggestions.

Idea of the Month: Goal driven reasoning

Are you focussed on hat you want to reach? Or rather on what you don't want? The power of "positive thinking" consists in finding a positively stated goal. Bill Gates gives a nice example in his book
"Business @ the speed of thought": "The goal of IT is making money! Do NOT concentrate on keeping IT costs low, BUT evaluate the expenses in terms of effectivity: how much do you gain?"

The same goes for whatever other expense you make. Some EQ warning: evaluate in terms of money, AND also whether the purchase gives you a good feeling. Ask yourself the question: "Suppose I made the expense, and it's in place, so that I can fully profit from its effects. Do I really enjoy this effect, or do I conclude that after all it wasn't as nice as I expected? (in NeuroLinguistics, this second step is called a "Future pace")

Case of the Month: Training the Project Manager

According to Guido Peetermans, European Training Manager for i2 Technologies, Project Management is one of the main problems in computer projects. Working as a project manager before joining i2 Technologies, he knows all about it. "Not only is it next to impossible to recruit good project managers, it is also next to impossible to train them. I have been looking for decent training, and all I can find are some "technical trainings" in proposal writing, and technical project management skills. However, such training is not enough."

Sure, sounds familiar. I heard a similar remark from the Quality Manager for Unisys Belgium. "After studying the market in Belgium for good training for Project Managers, ....

Delegation (article)

Derived from Latin, delegate means "to send from." When delegating you are sending the work "from" you "to" someone else. Effective delegation will not only give you more time to work on your important opportunities, but you will also help others on your team learn new skills.

  • Delegation helps people grow underneath you in an organization and thus pushes you even higher in management. It provides you with more time, and you will be able to take on higher priority projects.

  • Delegate whole pieces or entire job pieces rather than simply tasks and activities.

  • Clearly define what outcome is needed, then let individuals use some creative thinking of their own as to how to get to that outcome.

  • Clearly define limits of authority that go with the delegated job. Can the person hire other people to work with them? Are there spending constraints?

Dealing with Negative Attitude  (article)

Ten Ways to overcome a negative attitude

People deal too much with the negative, with what is wrong. Why not try and see positive things, to just touch those things and make them bloom? - Thich Nhat Hanh.......

At best, negativity is a coping mechanism for masking our pain. Rather than deal with our pain, we try to minimize it by diminishing our chances for happiness and our very selves. In other words, we don't want get our hopes up because nothing good ever happens to us. We don't want to be painfully disappointed yet again. Quite frankly, it is far easier to wallow in hopelessness than it is to take the necessary effort to turn our lives around. However, when we adopt a negative attitude, we are fighting dirty with ourselves. It is a personal smear campaign that negates our ...

Tips for New Manager (article)

Congratulations! You are now a manager. How did this happen? By the "magic fairy dust" method: Poof: "You are a manager"? Or did you go to the school of hard knocks (learning through trial and error)? Well, regardless of how, the more important question is: are you trained and prepared for the new intellectual and emotional challenges that await? Too often, employees are placed into the role of manager with little or no management training and development skills.

The following are ideas, tips and techniques we  have uncovered.

Stress Management (article)

Reducing Stress You Cause for Yourself

How to use tool:

Attitude is fundamental to long term stress management. Where your attitude is negative or hostile, you will create problems out of opportunities and cause stress by alienating and irritating other people. Where you have a positive attitude, you can maintain a sense of perspective and draw the positive elements out of each situation. You will find that people .....
